Stephen Wayne Sliger, 59, was born May 4, 1956, at Licking, Mo., to Garnett and Iris Sliger. He died Aug 7, 2015, at John Cochran VA Hospital, St. Louis, Mo., from complications of cancer.

He is survived by his wife, Wendy Sliger of the home in West Plains, Mo.; his parents, Garnett and Iris Sliger of Houston, Mo.; his children and stepchildren, Angela Sliger and Jason Eifler, Stephanie Sliger, Colorado Springs, Colo., Michelle Minge and Shaun Hammonds, Marionville, Mo., Justin Sliger and Ashley, Nixa, Mo., Leslie Jarvis and Heath, Farmington, Mo., Brianna Smith and Marcus, Lafayette, La., and Tyler Duncan and Vicki, Bellevue, Neb. He is also survived by three sisters, Pamela Sloan and Paul, Gassville, Ark., Teresa Franklin and Terry, Lebanon, Mo., and Brenda Gentry and Gary, Houston, Mo.; 18 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He is preceded in death by granddaughter Zoie JoAnn Wall, daughter of Stephanie.

Stephen was baptized into Christ on April 12, 1969. He graduated from Houston High School in 1975. He joined the U.S. Army in December of 1975 and was stationed in Kentucky, Louisiana, California and Hawaii during his service. Most of Stephen’s working career was owning his own business as a general contractor. He loved anything about NASCAR, including long talks with his parents about the sport. He loved being with his family, going fishing at the lakes and hunting for mushrooms. He had a great love for his dogs.

Stephen always had the ability to make people laugh. Even during his hospital stays during treatment for his cancer he would always try to make everything into a positive. His family, doctors, nurses and roommates were quite often entertained by his ability to put a spin on anything being talked about. He was very encouraging to others that he felt were in worse shape than he, but in all actuality he was much more ill. He fought until the end. He will be missed by many, including his many cousins, aunts and uncles, nieces, nephews and friends of long past and new.

In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate a donation to the American Cancer Society or Houston Varsity Football program in memory of the class of 1975.

A memorial will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, 2015, at the West Hwy. 17 Church of Christ in Houston, Mo. Stephen’s brothers-in-law, Paul Sloan and Gary Gentry, will conduct the memorial service.

It was Stephen’s wishes to be cremated and that his ashes will be spread at Caney Mountain north of Gainesville.
