Par for the Course

The Willow Springs Club championship was held last weekend and a familiar face ended up on top. Tyler Newton dominated the field and rolled to his fifth championship in the last 11 years. This was his first championship competition since knee surgery a year ago. Tyler opened a seven-shot lead after day one by firing a 72. He improved to 71 on the second day and no one really threatened. His 143 won by 16 shots over runner up Carl Hicks who shot 82-77. Third place went to last year's winner, Rick Scarbrough, who shot 80-80. Congrats to Tyler.

Par for the Course

Greetings from Sunny Destin. As I write this the waves are crashing ashore. It has been a beautiful week in Florida and I understand a rainy week in Willow Springs. By the time you read this I will be home again at the golf course. A week in Destin for vacation and then a few days in the Orlando area for my younger daughter’s wedding will mean a lot of driving, but a lot of beach time too.

Law Enforcement Torch Run

THE LAW ENFORCEMENT TORCH RUN relay was held Thursday in Willow Springs and West Plains to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics. Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) District Supervisor Jerry Elliott organized the event. Officers from MDC, Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP), West Plains Fire Department (WPFD) and Willow Springs Police Department (WSPD) participated. The relay began at the MSHP Troop G Headquarters in Willow Springs and traveled through the town. The run continued in West Plains down Porter Wagner Boulevard and various downtown streets and ended at Colton’s Steakhouse. Elliot said the Torch Run began 33 years ago and is held in 50 states and 35 countries around the world. "The event raises over $40 million annually and recruits more than 15,000 law enforcement officers from all over the world," he said. "What began in 1981 as a 30-mile run is now a relay covering more than 1,000 miles with over 1,000 runners. The mission of the Law Enforcement Torch Run is to raise both dollars and awareness for Special Olympics. Nearly 200 agencies and 2,500 officers work year-round in Missouri to accomplish this goal. All funds raised go towards supporting Special Olympics Missouri’s year-round sports training and athletic competition program for over 14,000 athletes across the state." First row, from left: MSHP trooper Gregory Tesch; Special Olympics athletes Eugene Barton, Sharon Guillot, Josh Gillian, Brooke Mathis, Mike Evans, Brett Schneier. Second row: Trooper Cole Chatman; juvenile officer Natalie Chatman; MSHP Sergeant Charley Hogue; Zachary Finley, Allyson Finley and juvenile officer Debra Finley; Mtn. View Police Department officer Jordan Goodwin; Missouri Sheriffs Academy Haley Honetcutt; MVPD officer Dusty Jones; WPFD Chief Tim Bean; Elliott.
Third row: MDC agent Tom Leeker; MSHP trooper Dave Huffman; MDC agent Mark Henry; MSHP trooper John Heimsoth; West Plains firefighter Paul Bradshaw; MSHP trooper Mark Philpott; MSHP lieutenant Don Larsen; West Plains firefighter Jacob Shipley; and MSHP lieutenant Dale Hicks. "A special thanks to the athletes of the Special Olympics for attending," Elliot said. "And to the Willow Springs Police Department, Willow Fire Department, West Plains Police Department, West Plains Fire Department for the escort and West Plains Fire Chief Tim Bean for the usage of the Mobile Command Vehicle." Par for the Course

This should be a short one since the weather allowed only the Monday (May 12) Casual League to be played. We scrambled from the junior tees and played the par 3 course. The team of Patsy Wyatt, Barb Tate and Buster Graves won by one shot and scored a 1-over par 28. Buster also won the closest-to-the-pin on the first shot on No. 9. With holes ranging from 65 yards to 250 yards, the par 3 setup is quite a challenge and great practice for your short game.

Par for the Course

The leagues have begun at Willow Springs and we had a good turnout for the first week. More golfers and teams are welcome. If you are not a member you can still play in the nine-hole leagues for just $5 a person. The Monday Casual League plays scrambles or some combination and divides up teams each night. The extra cost is $1 that goes to the steak cookout at the end of the season and there is also a 25 cent fee that goes to the hole prize winner each night. In the Cat and Dog League you need a male and female to play and the dollar goes to the best scores and the 25 cents goes to the closest to the pin on one of the designated par 3's. Come out and enjoy our leagues. In the Casual League this week the winning team was Farrell Graves, Jackson Bailey, Ryan Cawvey, Barb Tate and Buster Graves with a two under round. Closest to the pin was Jackson Bailey. In the Cat and Dog League a 36 turned in by Jamie and Kaye Tipton was the winning score and second went to Barb Tate and Buster Graves. Closest to the pin was won by Linda Benyo.
