West Plains Elementary School fourth grade teacher Angela Phipps, right, was named the Greater West Plains Area Chamber of Commerce Educator of the Year during the chamber’s annual awards banquet held Thursday evening at the civic center. The award was presented by Missouri State University-West Plains Chancellor Dennis Lancaster, who praised Phipps' caring and accommodation of her students' unique learning needs, her ability to inspire youngsters through enthusiasm and praise, and her efforts to communicate with parents. Phipps was nominated for the honor by her coworkers, students and other community members, and was also named the 2023 Educator of the Year by the West Plains R-7 School District. WP R-7 congratulates Holiday Bingo Challenge winners
West Plains R-7 District officials are congratulating two young bookworms from West Plains Elementary. Students recently participated in a Holiday Bingo Readers Challenge in the school library. Winners Zoey Diamond, first grade, and Charlie Risner, second grade, showed “incredible reading skills” to take their top spots, said officials. more

R-7 School Board considers eliminating early dismissal on Fridays
The December meeting of the West Plains R-7 School Board began with a wrap-up of fall high school student activities, including a visit by many sports and extracurricular activity participants. The students were introduced by Activities Director Dr. Ashley Cooley, and the activities spotlighted included cheerleading; girls tennis, softball, golf, and volleyball; boys soccer; girls and boys cross country; football; speech and debate; and theater. more

Barbara Caton, center, associate professor of nursing at Missouri State University-West Plains will retire from her position on Feb. 1, 2024, after 33 years with the university. Caton was hired as a lecturer on Dec. 3, 1991, and appointed as an instructor on Aug. 14, 2000. She was promoted to assistant professor and received tenure on Aug. 12, 2002. On Aug. 16, 2021, she was promoted to associate professor. Caton served as director of nursing/division chair from Aug. 1, 2011, to May 31, 2012, and as coordinator of nursing programs from Aug. 15, 2016, to Dec. 15, 2023. Dr. Kathleen Morrison, center, professor of political science at Missouri State University-West Plains, is retiring from her position on Feb. 1, 2024, after 34 ½ years with the university. Morrison was hired as an assistant professor on Aug. 21, 1989, and received tenure on Aug. 15, 1994. She was promoted to associate professor on Aug. 16, 1999, and to professor on Aug. 15, 2005. She served as division chair from 1995 to 2001. MSU-WP nursing program receives grant to help expansion efforts
Missouri State University-West Plains has been awarded grant funds of just over half a million dollars to help pay for the expansion of its nursing program, officials announced Monday. more
Delta Kappa Gamma's Xi Chapter initiated four new members during its November meeting. The new members, with their backs to the photographer, are, from left, Thayer Schools Superintendent Tonya Woods, Glenwood School Principal Allison Arnold, Glenwood K-8 principal, Missouri State University-West Plains Associate of Arts in Teaching Program Director ReBena Atkinson and Eminence High School English and drama teacher Emily Steelman. The ceremony took place at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Mtn. View. Delta Kappa Gamma is an international organization for professional women in education, and is based in Austin, Texas. Xi Chapter membership spans four area counties. The chapter aims to support the needs of local teachers, does service projects and gives scholarships, as well as providing members valuable education-related programs during its five yearly meetings.

Willow Springs School District Director of Communications Jenny Hayward demonstrates the Bear Media Productions room at Innovation Hall, part of the district's multimedia program, where students learn how to do school announcements, produce podcasts and live broadcasts, and web design and graphic design. There is also a computer lab, a video production room with a green screen, 3D printer and a large format printer to make banners, vinyl signs and perforated vinyl window coverings.
Open house showcases new uses for former MoDOT buildings in WS
New Willow Springs High School facilities and the programs housed within them were showcased at an open house held Tuesday evening, hosted by the district with tours guided by instructors and students. The facility, off of Springfield Road, was formerly the site of Missouri Department of Transportation offices and recently purchased by the school district from the City of Willow Springs for $1. more

Uphaus named new principal of WPE starting July 1
Officials with the West Plains R-7 School District have announced Virginia Uphaus will assume the role of West Plains Elementary School principal for the 2024-2025 school year. Effective July 1, 2024, she will fill the vacancy left by the retirement of current Principal Becky Hutchinson.  more
Eslinger named new Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education
The State Board of Education announced Tuesday that 33rd District Sen. Karla Eslinger, of Wasola in Ozark County, will assume the role as the state’s next commissioner for the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) effective June 1, 2024, after concluding her work in the Missouri Senate during the 2024 legislative session. more

South Fork Elementary Preschool students recently had the opportunity to meet Jill Pietroburgo, a local author and one of West Plains R-7 School District’s special education teachers. Pietroburgo shared her new book, "Sometimes Grandma Calls Me Jean," and inspired the class with gratitude for family memories and being thankful for loved ones.

West Plains Elementary principals recently served up “sweet treats for an amazing team,” doling out cups of Spring Dipper ice cream to faculty and staff, shared school district Communications Director Lana Snodgras. “Here’s the scoop: We are incredibly thankful for each of you,” she added.
