Walmart of West Plains donated to several area causes during its grand reopening celebration held Nov. 3. Among the beneficiaries was the West Plains High School choir, which gave a performance for the festivities, under the direction of Kelly Dame, front row, far right. The business presented the Zizzer choir with a check for $1,000, prompting Communications Director Lana Snodgras to express thanks on behalf of the West Plains R-7 School District. “Thank you to Walmart for the generous donation to the West Plains High School choir,” she said. “Your support hits a high note in our school.”

MSU-WP marks First-Generation College Celebration Day
On Nov. 8, Missouri State University-West Plains joined hundreds of colleges and universities across the nation in celebrating its “first generation” students (students who are the first in their families to attend college) as part of the National First-Generation College Celebration Day. more
Gov. Mike Parson gave remarks on Tuesday preceding the groundbreaking of a building on the Missouri State University-West Plains campus that will house the university's TJ Swift House A.S.C.E.N.D. Program. A.S.C.E.N.D. stands for Autism Support Can Empower New Directions, and is already in place at MSU-WP, offering support services for students with autism. Other speakers included MSU President Clif Smart, MSU-WP Chancellor Dennis Lancaster, Tracey Hollis of TJ Swift House and 33rd District State Sen. Karla Eslinger, who introduced Parson.

MSU-WP spring semester schedules available online 
Area residents interested in taking classes at Missouri State University-West Plains during the 2024 spring semester can now browse through a list of courses online. more
More than five dozen students, current and past faculty, representatives of West Plains R-7 School District administration and members of the Greater West Plains Area Chamber of Commerce gathered Oct. 25 to christen the recently renamed Southern Missouri Technical Institute (SoMoTech), formerly the South Central Career Center. Norris Cozort was in attendance as an instructor that taught at the vocational school at its beginning. The facility is operated by the West Plains R-7 district, and accepts high school and adult students in training programs in agriculture, auto body and collision repair, auto mechanics technology, carpentry, commercial and advertising art, culinary arts, drafting technology, family and consumer science, and health sciences including practical nursing, surgical technology and welding. It is accredited by the Commission of the Council on Occupational Education and the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and several program-specific accrediting agencies. Cutting the ribbon is SoMoTech Director Dr. Josh Cotter, who spearheaded the process to change the name. With him, to his right, are School Board President Jim Thompson and Superintendent Dr. Wes Davis.

Students enrolled in building trades classes at West Plains High School, including many who travel from other schools to attend classes, have been working on completing a project that will connect the library to an annex located just east of the main building and make it compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, as wall as safer by eliminating one of the outside entrances to the library. Zizzers gain hands-on trade experience with high school annexation project
A group of West Plains High School students is gaining valuable hands-on experience while helping make the campus safer and more accessible to students and staff who require the use of a wheelchair. more

The Bear Ambassadors, a new leadership group at the Willow Springs High School, took a moment to thank Jalen Burris, a representative of health and wellness technology organization UNITE's Arrive Alive Tour. Burris ran an impaired-driving simulation Tuesday and Wednesday at the high school. The students are holding pledges signed by participating students to buckle up and put their phones down while driving to reduce the risks of distracted driving, and the likelihood of being injured or killed or harming others as a result. Paying tribute to the “grannywomen” who took care of their isolated communities in the rural Ozarks was the theme of the keynote address by Dr. Dawn Larsen at the 16th annual Ozarks Studies Symposium at Missouri State University-West Plains in September. Larsen, a Taney County native who now teaches theater at Francis Marion University in Florence, S.C., told the story of these women who served as healers, seers and midwives in their communities through word and song. Dr. Jason McCollom, one of the event’s organizers, said Larsen’s performance was the highlight of the three-day event. The symposium had its largest attendance ever this year, with an estimated 120 attendees taking part in the presentations and exhibits. Presenters from across the Ozarks, and some from out of state shared their current research and investigations into a variety of facets of Ozarks history, culture, architecture, oral history, the environment, literature, poetry and music. McCollom said the theme of next year’s event is “The Political Economy of the Ozarks” and all are invited to attend.

Why I chose to attend Missouri State-West Plains
Editor’s note: Having just graduated high school, traditional students may seem eager to embrace the next chapter in their educational journey – college. But that’s not always the case. Going through the processes to pick the college they want to attend can seem daunting, then comes actually attending the classes so they can get a degree. Shane Hull, a current sophomore at Missouri State University-West Plains (MSU-WP), has been through the processes and will be sharing his story in this column and subsequent columns in the coming months to provide insights into the higher education processes for others like him who are embarking on their own collegiate journey. Hull works part time on several projects in the MSU-WP university communications office. more

Proclamations from the Missouri State Senate, Missouri House of Representatives and the City of West Plains recognizing Missouri State University-West Plains’ 60th anniversary were presented to Chancellor Dennis Lancaster during the 60th Diamond Jubilee celebration Sept. 16 at the amphitheater. On hand for the presentations were, from left, 154th District State Rep. David Evans (R-West Plains), West Plains Mayor Mike Topliff, 33rd District State Sen. Karla Eslinger (R-Wasola) and Lancaster.
State, local officials join in Jubilee celebration
Members of the Willow Springs FFA competed at the Area 13 Fall Public Speaking Contest Tuesday evening in West Plains, and two individuals will be moving on to the South Central District contest taking place Nov. 9 in Rolla, shared school district Communications Director Jenny Hayward. Students were tasked with presenting six- to eight-minute speeches for judges. The Bears’ Opening/Closing Ceremonies team placed second, and individual members Katy Spence placed first with her her speech on sheep and Kolton Stolba placed third with a speech on young farmers/young farm wives. Nine other FFA Bears presented speeches during the contest. Spence and Stolba will be joined in the Rolla contest by other ranking FFA members from St. Louis and St. Louis County; Jefferson, Washington, Franklin, Gasconade, Crawford, Osage, Maries, Miller, Pulaski, Phelps, Dent, Shannon, Texas, Oregon and Howell counties; and eastern Douglas and Ozark counties.
