SOLID WASTE FIRE

West Plains firefighters were called to put out a fire at about 10:45 a.m. Thursday morning at the city’s solid waste facility on Old Airport Road. The flames reportedly started on a trailer loaded for transport to a Hartville landfill, where the city’s trash eventually ends up. Here, West Plains Fire Department Lt. Wayne Cormier directs water into the trailer. The fire was likely caused by something smoldering in waste that had been picked up, then loaded into the trailer by sanitation workers, Fire Chief Roy Sims said.
