EASTERN REDBUDS

EASTERN REDBUDS are in bloom right now, distinguished by their dark purplish-pink flowers. The small tree is native to Missouri, and the Missouri Department of Conservation encourages homeowners to plant them as ornamentals in favor of other non-natives that might be invasive, such as the Bradford or Callery pear. Spring is the season for buds and blooms, and nature proceeds despite the current threat to human health; red maples and flowering dogwoods are also blooming right now, and young birds and other wildlife will soon make their appearance. This redbud tree and several others in the yard of Seven Gables, the name given to Don and Jeri Dias' Victorian home located on Missouri Avenue near Georgia White Walking Park.
