Evidence seized by West Plains police during a recent traffic stop and search of a home for drugs included bags of a substance believed to be meth labeled for their weights, items suspected of use in the consumption of the substance, money and measuring devices, said police.
Search warrant, vehicle stop lead to drug trafficking charges for WP woman
West Plains Police conducted a traffic stop March 13 on a vehicle with a driver suspected of distributing illegal narcotics, leading to a search of the vehicle, which turned up illegal substances, according to police. The stop was made while officers were en route to serve a search warrant at a home on Burke Avenue, which was also the home of the vehicle’s driver, according to a probable cause statement submitted to prosecutors by Officer Jacob Brixey. more

Auction items also included quilts, jewelry, furniture and outdoor gear. This year’s benefit raised more than $92,000, said organizers. A vacant two-story house at 929 Washington Ave. in West Plains that was under renovation caught fire early Sunday morning and spread to a neighboring house, resulting in a total loss of both structures and an investigation by the State Fire Marshal's Office into the cause. Two residents of the house next door, 925 Washington Ave., were able to escape from the fire without injury, but lost a pet cat during the blaze, according to West Plains Assistant Fire Chief Chris Sterner.

West Plains woman sentenced to 18 years on federal drug charge
Amanda Jones, 39, West Plains, has been sentenced to 18 years and four months in federal prison without possibility of parole after pleading guilty in October to a count of possessing methamphetamine with the intent to distribute. more
Through Saturday, 10/40 Coffee, as a fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis of West Plains, is donating the proceeds from sales of its cinnamon roll latte, hot or iced. The coffeeshop, now under the ownership of Lynette Cooper, is open 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays at 24 Court Square. Cooper said the cinnamon roll flavor is normally offered in the fall, and it is a white mocha with cinnamon topped by a sweet cream foam sprinkled with more cinnamon. She said due to the drink's popularity it has been continued. The business also donated a $100 gift card to be auctioned off the night of the group’s benefit concert to be held Saturday. Country artist Sara Evans will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday at the West Plains Civic Center, preceded by silent and live auctions of donated items and a performance by local volunteer singing group Jessica's Friends. 10/40's cinnamon roll latte season extended, sales of drink to support cystic fibrosis research
Recently, 154th District Rep. David Evans, West Plains, was caught smiling in appreciation of the Missouri House’s vote to approve House Bill 1486, authorizing, for the first time, state funding of voluntary kindergarten and prekindergarten programs by local schools. He is seen here watching the House voting board showing final vote totals. “It’s great to see the state supporting programs that will help our kids build a better future for all Missourians,” said Evans. Evans has announced his retirement effective the end of this year, and said he is withdrawing his candidacy for reelection. To date, no other candidates from any party have filed for the seat; interested candidates have until 5 p.m. March 26 to file. Newberry Sales has donated a cast iron hanging fire pit with a Kansas City Chiefs logo cutout to be sold during a live auction at the 36th annual cystic fibrosis fundraising concert on Saturday. Proceeds will be donated to Cystic Fibrosis of West Plains for research into treatments and a future cure for the disease. The fire pit was made by Newberry Sales employee Mike Pankey, and features a grate for cooking use. Silent auction items will be set up when the event begins at 5 p.m., and the live auction will begin at about 6:30. The performance, by country artist Sara Evans, will begin at about 7 p.m. It is at the West Plains Civic Center, 110 St. Louis St. Tickets for adults are $30 in advance or $40 at the door, and $5 for children age 12 and younger regardless of when purchased. Zizzer alumna Madylin Cooper, Class of 2022, left, is a former Project Lead the Way (PLTW) biomedical student who was asked to continue an independent project, which she developed at West Plains High School, as a student at Clemson University. With her is Nathan Fleming, a West Plains High School teacher and PLTW instructor, and 2022 recipient of a National Outstanding Teacher award for PLTW.
