Saturday morning crash on ZZ Hwy. claims life of West Plains man
A 28-year-old man from West Plains is dead of injuries suffered in a traffic crash at 4:40 a.m. Saturday on ZZ Highway eight miles east of West Plains, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. more
Holiday closures announced
All city, council and state government offices and buildings will be closed Monday for Christmas, and on Jan. 1 for New Year’s Day. This includes driver exam stations and license offices, the Howell County office building and courthouse, and West Plains City Hall and the public library. The U.S. Post office lobby will also be closed. more

Mo Dept. of Ag clears Santa to spread Christmas cheer (copy)
Director of Agriculture Chris Chinn and Missouri State Veterinarian Dr. Steve Strubberg on Friday approved livestock movement papers for nine reindeer. Santa Claus from the North Pole applied for the permit last week, providing proof of the healthy herd through a certificate of veterinary inspection signed by licensed veterinarian Dr. Hermey Elf. more
Missouri State University-West Plains graduate Heather Day, West Plains, received the MSU Citizen Scholar Award during the Board of Governor’s meeting Thursday in Springfield. Area residents interested in flying drones commercially can attend a workshop at Missouri State University-West Plains Jan. 10 through 12 to help them prepare for the Federal Aviation Administration’s certification exam. more
Model Railroad Club display on exhibit at Harlin Museum
The West Plains Model Railroad Club has its sixth annual December Display set up through Dec. 30 at the Harlin Museum, 405 Worcester St. in West Plains. There are three large setups with plenty to bring out the kid in everyone and spark the imagination. The display includes a Christmas train that runs through a snowy village, miniature scenes, movie vehicles and a motorized carnival, plus visitors may purchase tickets for a chance to win a starter train set. Hours are 2 to 6 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays and noon to 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through Christmas Eve. The museum will be closed Christmas Day, but the display will be open again from noon to 5 p.m. Dec. 26 through 30. Club members promise new things to see on layouts of various sizes and scales, and visitors are invited to look for bears, a sniper and other "hidden" items located in the highly detailed landscapes. Admission is free, but donations are welcome to help pay club costs, and train-related items will be available for purchase. more
The staff of the West Plains Daily Quill wish all a festive and warm holiday season. As a reminder, the office will be closed on Christmas and New Year’s Day, with normal office hours resuming the Tuesdays following both holidays. Early deadlines are in effect for several upcoming issues: obituaries meant for this Saturday’s Gazette must be submitted to the Quill by 11 a.m. Thursday, and those meant to print Dec. 30 are due by 11 a.m. Dec. 28. All ads, including classifieds and legal notices meant for Dec. 27 publication must be submitted and approved by the advertiser by 5 p.m. Friday, and those for Jan. 3 must be likewise submitted and approved by 5 p.m. Dec. 29. Kenneth H. Worthy, 48, West Plains, federally convicted Dec. 6, 2022, of sexual exploitation of a child and distributing child pornography, has been sentenced to 40 years in federal prison without parole, followed by 15 years of supervised release. more

Man wanted on October charge of violating terms of prison release arrested
A West plains resident recently released from prison and wanted for a felony charge of violation of a lifetime condition of release was taken into custody on a no-bond warrant Dec. 8, according to court records. more

Sitting for a first photo with Santa and Mrs. Claus is Alexander Spraggins, 11 months, with big brother Joseph Shorter, 13, providing moral support. Alexander seemed a little curious about the jolly old elf, but kept a stiff upper lip through the tradition that sometimes upsets youngsters that are usually wary of strangers. The boys were attending the Cookies with Claus event Saturday, a fundraiser for the West Plains Boys and Girls Club. Event contributors and volunteers included Ramey Supermarket, Sugar Lily Bakery and Floral, Sweet Temptations, Creative Cakes, and Rescue Church. Mayor Mike Topliff and wife Pam were also volunteers, representing the City of West Plains.

Community First Banking Company and its employees have donated $3,500 to Heart of the Ozarks United Way’s annual fundraising campaign. The donation will be disbursed to the United Way’s partner nonprofit agencies: 37th Judicial CASA, Christos House, Agape House, Samaritan Outreach, Sadie Brown Cemetery, Girl Scout Hut of West Plains, Mtn. View Youth Center, Willow Springs YMCA, Girls and Boys Club of Thayer and the Single Parent Scholarship Fund of Fulton County, Ark. “We are extremely grateful for the annual donation from Community First Banking Company,” said local United Way Director Stacy Tintocalis. “Each year their generous donations have made a huge impact on our partner agencies.” Heart of the Ozarks United Way raises funds for 10 partner nonprofit agencies and runs three internal programs that support low-income households. Each year, businesses and individuals can make tax-deductible donations to Heart of the Ozarks United Way to support their partner agencies. A West Plains woman who allegedly took two vehicles belonging to her deceased boyfriend after his death has been charged with two felony counts of first-degree tampering with a motor vehicle. more

Shop With A Cop was held Saturday morning at Walmart, bringing happiness and holiday cheer to dozens of area children who might otherwise not have a lot for Christmas. Here, Howell County Sheriff's Department Cpl. Seth Smith helped Natalie Hodges, 3, of Koshkonong, choose some items, including some fashionable safety gear. About 110 children were given an allowance of $175 and paired with a public safety or law enforcement employee to pick out Christmas gifts for themselves or others, sponsored by the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 43. Donations were made by Walmart, local businesses and private citizens, and recipients were determined by need. Participating agencies were the Howell County Sheriff's Office, West Plains Police Department, Mtn. View Police Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol, Missouri Department of Conservation, Missouri State Fire Marshal's Office and State Fire Marshal Tim Bean, South Howell County Ambulance, Air Evac Lifeteam, West Plains Fire Department, Howell County Rural Fire Department, Pomona Fire Department and the 37th Judicial Circuit Juvenile Office. Lead, Engage, and Develop (L.E.A.D.) West Plains Program Coordinator Brandy Stutsman gave a presentation about the newly available L.E.A.D. program at Thursday's monthly Greater West Plains Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon. The sessions are to be held over 12 weeks beginning Feb. 29, 2024, and are intended to provide participants with leadership skills and the motivation to successfully engage with the community for the betterment of its economic and civic health.
