4-H Club holding food drive more
The West Plains Daily Quill recently sold pink ribbon advertisements as a fundraising effort for the Ozarks Healthcare and Lady Zizzer Basketball Pink Out Game, an annual event that raises money for breast cancer research. This year’s game was held Feb. 6. The Quill sold 41 ads and donated $5 per ad from the proceeds, for a total of $205. Quill raises over $200 for Pink Out cause
Earthwork for a new railroad overpass on U.S. 160/Independence Drive has been done and progress continues to move smoothly along, said West Plains Planning Director Emily Gibson. Construction of the overpass is expected to be complete by the end of the year, with finishing touches such as restoration of plant life to follow. The railroad crossing at Thornburgh Avenue will be closed once the overpass is opened to traffic.
Independence Drive overpass ‘a major step toward enhancing safety’
Long-anticipated work on the railroad overpass project on Independence Drive and U.S. 160 in West Plains is said to be smoothly moving along. It has been 17 years since the project was first conceptualized.
"Currently, the project is progressing as expected," saiid City of West Plains Planning Director Emily Gibson. "The project is expected to be substantially completed by the end of 2025." By that time, Gibson said, work should be focused on finishing details, such as restoring vegetation disturbed by the building process.
Asked how the community will benefit from the new overpass, Gibson said it will allow for safe and continuous travel across both Howell Creek and the railroad. more

Snow falls steadily in this photo snapped outside Quill General Manager Abby Hess' kitchen window near downtown West Plains. While an official report had not yet been made by 5:30 p.m., the photographer guessed at least 2 of inches of snow had fallen since flakes first appeared shortly after 11 a.m. The National Weather Service in Springfield expects the heaviest snow to fall between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Al and Gloria Tilman, residents of Cedarhurst Senior Living in West Plains, will be married 67 years in April and were crowned Valentine King and Queen on Friday. That day, Valentine’s Day, was also Al's birthday, making it that much more special. They are one of seven couples living at Cedarhurst, Life Enrichment Director Kim Harralston said. The day was full of flowers, chocolates and other tokens of love. Each of the facility's 65 residents got dozens of cards sent from eight states, including Jefferson City in Missouri, Michigan, California, Texas, South Dakota, Kentucky, Virginia and Nebraska, as part of the Angel Card Project. The project is a volunteer effort to send cards to those who, like the elderly, might feel isolated during holidays like Valentine's Day. Cedarhurst received about 800 cards total. Additionally, staff members each drew a resident's name and bought them a gift, and balloons were delivered by volunteers as part of a community effort organized by several local churches and Family Dollar.
