A man who escaped the custody of the Howell County Sheriff’s Department during transport from the Howell County courthouse to the jail remains at large as of Monday morning, according to officials.
A warrant was issued for Wesley Floyd James Hanger, 18, Grace Avenue. Hanger was handcuffed during his escape.
The incident happened at about 12:45 p.m. Friday and officers were searching the area of Aid Avenue and Monks Street.
The West Plains schools and University of Missouri–West Plains were put in a soft lockdown at about 2 p.m. as a precautionary measure that lasted about 10 minutes.
Court records show Hanger was arrested on a charge of probation violation on Jan. 10 on a conviction of stealing more than $750. He posted $5,000 bail the next day.
Records show Hanger had a court date Friday on a charge of failure to appear and his bond was forfeited and replaced with a $25,000 bail.
A warrant has now been issued on an additional charge of escape from custody while under arrest for a felony, with a bail set at $5,000.
Anyone with information on Hanger’s whereabouts is encouraged to contact the Howell County Sheriff’s Department at 256-2544 or the West Plains Police Department at 256-2244.
