To the Editor:

The effects of global warming and the resulting climate changes are becoming more evident every day, but many in the Republican party now insist that it is not real. They are so focused on supporting the position of their major contributors and letting businesses make profits they ignore and distort the real costs to the planet and its people.

It is very revealing that their present position flies in the face of the facts. Before November of 2018 a number of major Republican figures were urging action to fight global warming. See the 12 minute video, “A brief history of American inaction on climate change” on YouTube to hear and see George W. Bush, Newt Gingrich, Rudy Giuliani and other Republicans state their belief in and action against global warming.

As you watch them “flip-flop” in spite of the increased evidence against their new position you will see a graph of increasing global temperature and decreasing arctic sea ice. They did not change their positions because of new evidence, but because of increased political and billionaire donor pressure.

The result of a recent analysis of over 12,000 journal abstracts showed “...there is a 97 percent consensus amongst the scientific experts and scientific research that humans are causing global warming.” ( Why would anyone follow the recommendations of three percent of experts instead of 97 percent on a subject based on objective evidence? It certainly won’t be because they base their decision on reality.

A recent posting on the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) Forum by one of the authors of an article in the JAMA summarizes their work as, “Overall, an extremely conservative estimate is that the Trump environmental agenda is likely to cost the lives of over 80,000 US residents per decade and lead to respiratory problems for many more than 1 million people. This sobering statistic captures only a small fraction of the cumulative public health damages associated with the full range of rollbacks and systemic actions proposed by the Trump administration.” How can these politicians ignore the cost in lives and health their policies will cause?

I urge you not to support politicians who support measures that will hurt you and your family for decades to come. I urge you to urge others to do the same.
