Pet of the Week
This orange tabby, named OK Kitty, is housed at the West Plains Regional Animal Shelter, 1486 BB Highway, having been surrendered by its previous owner due to illness. Shelter volunteer Trish Hammen says OK Kitty is missing home, is a good kitty and “would love to go home with a loving family.” The fee to adopt a cat is $45. Hammen noted with the recent onset of cold weather that the shelter burns firewood to keep its animals warm, and she anticipates volunteers will need a lot of wood this fall and winter. Anyone with downed trees in need of cutting is invited to call the shelter, 417-256-8438, or drop by between business hours, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. Donations of already-cut firewood are also welcome. Hammen added the shelter continues to need cat and dog food. more

Pat Hirzel, West Plains, had her 100th birthday party Thursday in the community building at The Timbers, where she lived until June when she made a move to Pleasant Valley Manor. Hirzel was born in 1922 in Los Angeles, and was a tennis instructor for 40 years, having learned from her father, also a tennis instructor, at the age of 6. She later took up golf, has stayed active, and is currently on no medications despite having a heart valve replacement a year ago.

Lena Blanche Tackitt of Caulfield celebrated her 100th birthday Friday with a party at the Caulfield Community Building, attended by dozens of family members and friends. Blanche is known as Granny B by those closest to her, and was stationed near the door of the building to receive cards and make sure guests signed a keepsake book. One of her youngest visitors was great-great-great-granddaughter Lydia Ann Duke, who turned 6 just four days before. Lydia is the daughter of Jeff and Cheyenne Webb.

Bob and Amber Trautman are in the process of moving from 530 E. Main St., but will take a lifetime of memories with them. The couple have owned the house since 1989, and raised son Clay and daughter Cara there. They have taken pains to preserve many of the original elements of the house while making it a home that was “truly lived in” for their children, now grown. Their hope is that the next owners will also appreciate its history while building filling it with new memories.

The Boys and Girls Club of the Greater West Plains Area, in partnership with the city of West Plains and Spring Dipper, have sponsored a “Meet Up and Eat Up” event from noon to 1 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at the Peoples Park pavilion since June 25. The program, now in its final week of the season, offers a free lunch to all children up to age 18. The last day for the free lunch is Friday. Club Operations Director Miranda Allen said about 50 participants a day have enjoyed the program, with the incentive of either a pool pass to the West Plains Aquatic Center or ice cream from Spring Dipper with at least five punches on a punch card for participating.
