Saturday, the Dora High School boys basketball season came to a close when the team fell to Jefferson Conception Junction High School in the Missouri State High School Activities Class 1 boys state championship at JQH Arena in Springfield. Jefferson defeated Dora 75-65. The Falcons end the 2018-19 season with a 30-2 record.
Jefferson jumped out to an 11-point first quarter lead. Dora made a second-quarter run to cut the lead to 31-29 at halftime.
The second half saw Dora in foul trouble with three starters fouling out of the contest.
“We made another run late to pull within 5 points but it just wasn’t our day,” said Dora Head Coach Rick Luna. “What most people don’t realize is Jefferson played nearly a perfect game. They only missed seven shots for the entire game. That stat alone is unheard of.
“For us to be as close as we were playing against a team that was just simply “hot” says a lot for my guys. They never gave up and kept fighting till the last buzzer. I couldn’t be more proud of these 16 young men for what they have accomplished.”
The Falcons were disappointed to leave Springfield without a championship but were proud of all of its accomplishments.
“Second place wasn’t the goal we set out for, but the boys had a great season,” said Luna. “They won all three tournaments they were in, set a school record with 30 wins, made it farther than any other team in school history and along the way picked up a lot of incredible fans.
“Myself, and the team want to thank everyone for traveling to our games and supporting us. In Districts we played in front of standing room only at Cabool, then at Mtn. Grove to a huge crowd, then at Van Buren where it was standing room only again and in Springfield we played in front of five or six thousand people each day and our fans were shining through. The boys will always remember the game, but they will also always remember how much support they had along this incredible ride.”
