A 13-year-old boy who was flown to Mercy Hospital in Springfield on Sunday after an ATV rolled on top of him has succumbed to his injuries, reports the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The boy, a resident of Winona, was a passenger in a 2022 Massimo 500 ATV that overturned while its 9-year-old driver, a boy from Willow Springs, tried to make a left turn on private property on Railroad Drive half a mile south of Willow Springs, reported Tpr. L.J. Combs with Troop G of the patrol, Willow Springs. Neither boy wore a helmet and both were thrown from the vehicle, the report shows. No injuries were reported for the 9-year-old.

Missouri law enforcement does not publicize the names of minors due to laws protecting their privacy.

The teen was flown by Air Evac to Mercy Hospital for treatment of serious injuries, and it was there he was pronounced dead at 8:19 p.m. Tuesday by Dr. Danyal Thayer, pediatric critical care physician, the report shows.

The death marks the fourth traffic fatality to date this year in the nine-county Troop G area, compared to 11 in the same time frame in 2023.

Combs was assisted at the scene by Cpl. M. Barron.
