Burn ban status under review

The Howell County Commission will review the status of the burn ban put in place last week during its regular Monday session.

Commissioners will meet at 10 a.m. Monday in the conference room on the second floor of the county office building, 35 Court Square in West Plains. At the top of the agenda is a conference with South Central Ozarks Council of Government representatives to discuss an amendment to the amount of a Community Development Block Grant issued to Christos House.

Following that, commissioners will review the ban order issued on March 20.

Accounts payable will be approved and guests recognized.

The commission typically meets each Monday and Thursday. The public is welcome.

Downtown Strolls kick off on Thursday

West Plains Downtown Revitalization will kick off its monthly Downtown Strolls next week: from 4 to 7 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month, downtown businesses will extend their hours, live music and kids’ activities will be offered around Court Square and along Washington Avenue and participants can fill out their Downtown Passports for a chance to win a prize.

“This is a free community event designed to highlight all that downtown West Plains has to offer,” said Downtown Coordinator Emily Edwards-Long. “We’d love for you to join us and make the most of these fun-filled evenings!”

The strolls kick off this Thursday. To see who is participating, visit the West Plains Downtown Revitalization page on Facebook, @WPDTR, and check the comment section of the post announcing the West Plains Downtown *Stroll*. On the day of the event, look for the businesses with balloons to help you find them faster.

Balloon Glow & Firework Show is April 12

The annual Balloon Glow & Firework Show fundraiser for the Child Advocacy Center to combat child abuse will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. April 12 at the Heart of the Ozarks Fairgrounds on North U.S. 63 in West Plains. Admission is $10 to $20, and tickets are available online at childadvocacycenter.org/balloon-glow.

Food and beverage vendors will be on hand. All are asked to bring their own chairs and blankets for seating, and to carpool to accommodate limited parking.

All proceeds from the event will go toward supporting CAC’s West Plains office. Organizers note that the event is weather-dependent, and could be delayed or postponed for hazardous weather. All ticket sales are final.
