Posted

The city had East Main Street from Court Square to behind West Plains Bank and Trust’s building roped off Tuesday morning as crews started the first day of work to demolish the former Powell Crews Title and Escrow building. West Plains Public Relations Coordinator Cody Sanders said demolition of the historic building at 112 E. Main St. and debris removal will continue through the week. Crews started work to demolish the building at 6 a.m. Tuesday. The building was slated for removal after a fire gutted it  on Feb. 1. The blaze started in the Powell Crews Title and Escrow building and spread to two adjacent buildings. The location was also the site of the 1928 explosion that took out a the Wiser garage and the dancehall above it, claiming the lives of 37. West Plains Police Chief Stephen Monticelli said in a February interview that the fire department did an excellent job of saving the buildings next to it. Sanders said East Main Street from Court Square to behind West Plains Bank and Trust’s building should be open to traffic by Friday afternoon. Powell Crews Title and Escrow has since relocated to 38 Court Square in the West Plains Opera House building.
