Strong public health leads to healthy communities

Posted

To the editor:

Monday was the beginning of National Public Health Week, a time where we can sit back on the importance of our shared work and celebrate that we are all part of something much bigger than ourselves.

Public health is about people — helping families, supporting businesses and responding to crises before they become disasters. It’s a commitment to prevention, because the best way to treat illness is to stop it before it starts.

Local public health agencies (LPHAs) are the backbone of public health. New polling data from the Missouri Public Health Institute demonstrates how great of a job LPHAs are truly doing. Seventy-nine percent of Missourians who were polled reported a positive experience when using their LPHA, 60% reported a high level of trust in their LPHA, and 86% believed their LPHA was providing unbiased and accurate information.

And 83% support increasing funding for local public health agencies for increased staffing, locations, hours and outreach efforts.

The data shows that LPHAs are the second-most trusted local institution in Missouri, behind only firefighters and ahead of police and public schools. Those numbers are truly amazing. It proves that LPHAs are providing great services and have worked hard to build trust among their community members.

Undoubtedly, there have been tremendous changes and challenges laid before us in recent weeks. To me, those challenges have underscored how crucial it is that we continue telling our stories and serving our communities.

As leaders in public health, your work goes beyond responding to crises. You’re shaping healthier futures through prevention, education and strong community partnerships.

The philosophy of public health is simple: Proactive care and disease prevention leads to stronger, more resilient communities. Your dedication ensures that Missourians have access to the resources and support they need to live healthier lives.

Healthy communities start with strong public health. Every day, Missouri’s public health agencies are making a lasting impact — preventing disease, promoting wellness and protecting the health of our communities. From ensuring safe drinking water and food inspections to vaccinations and emergency preparedness, you are on the front lines, working to keep our communities safe and healthy.

Your leadership drives public health and the state of Missouri forward. Together, we’ll continue making a difference in the life of every Missourian. Thank you for your commitment to promoting and protecting the health and safety of Missourians every day.
