The City of Thayer is hosting eclipse camping through Tuesday, complete with a nightly bonfire, live music, shuttles and food vendors.
Multiple events are sponsored by the Thayer and Mammoth Spring, Ark., Chambers of Commerce during the weekend, and campers will have access to a shower house and port-a-potties. RV and tent camping is available.
Events include a Total Solar Eclipse Cruise-in from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today in the Thayer High School parking lot, with live music from 3rd Cut from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and food vendors. The first 250 visitors will receive free eclipse glasses.
Thayer High School will also be host to today’s free Eclipse Festival with games for kids, food vendors, a bouncer house and live music beginning at 4 p.m. with The Jumpin Jacks. At 6 p.m., The Highway W Band will play and the fun wraps up with a fireworks show starting at 8. The first 500 guests in attendance will receive free eclipse glasses.
Mammoth Spring State Park will also offer free glasses while supplies last, and host educational presentations at 1:30 p.m. today and Sunday at its Train Depot Museum. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and Sunday, a flint knapping exhibition will be held near the park’s ball field, during which guests can learn how to make their own arrowheads.
Thayer, in Oregon County just above the Arkansas state line, and Mammoth Spring, just on the other side of the state line in Arkansas, will experience over four minutes of totality during the eclipse. To get to Thayer, take U.S. 63 south from West Plains about 25 miles.
