An accidental fire Tuesday at West Plains Recycling Center, 2813 Holiday Lane, appears to have been caused by heat from equipment used at the business, which ignited one of the piles of materials, according to a report submitted by the West Plains Fire Department.
Local firefighters were called out at about 11:41 a.m. Tuesday and were assisted in controlling the blaze with mutual aid from the Eleven Point Fire Department, Howell County Rural Fire District No. 1 and the Pomona Fire Department.
When they arrived, heavy smoke and fire was seen coming from the crushed car area of the scrapyard, near a stationary compactor.
A combined 9,000 gallons of water from tankers and about 20,000 gallons from an onsite fire hydrant were reportedly used to put the fire out. It took about two hours to put out the fire and firefighters spent about another hour ensuring there were no areas in danger of reigniting.
