The Zizzer boys and girls track and field teams departed Thursday morning for Jefferson City to compete in the Class 4 state championships, held Friday and continuing today. The team members were encouraged by members of the cheerleading squad, junior varsity team members, faculty and staff. They then boarded the bus and made a stop at the elementary school where they were greeted by summer school students before heading to Ozark Cafe to fill up before going on to Jefferson City. Both teams earned their spots in the competition by defeating Carl Junction on May 17, where they took the district title, then qualifying 19 members on May 24 at Sectionals in Waynesville. Zizzers take their marks for state
A new school record in the 4X100-meter relay was set by runners on the West Plains Zizzers boys track team at the Class 4, Sectional 3, track and field meet Saturday at Waynesville High School. Relay team members are, from left, Cameron Miller, Zack Tinsley, Coach Greg Dixon, Will Stauffer and Lincoln Miller. Their time of 41.86 bested a 2022 record of 42.34. The West Plains boys team placed first at the meet, the girls fourth.

West Plains High School junior Lily Dixon of the Zizzers girls track and field team, lands a long jump Monday during the Last Chance meet at Zizzer Stadium. "Monday’s Zizzer Last Chance meet was a late season tune-up meet designed to allow athletes a last chance to get season best performances for district seeding at the district meet," West Plains Head Coach Greg Dixon said. "It is also a meet to give schools a chance to get additional entries in specific events, if they meet MSHSAA (Missouri State High School Athletics Association) state standards in that event." Along with West Plains, teams from Marshfield, Nixa and Mtn. Home (Ark.) Christian Academy participated in the meet. "We were able to get the entire meet in even though we had rain," Dixon said. With seedings and the bracket not yet finalized, the Zizzers boys and girls teams are set to compete today in the district championship meet at Carl Junction.
Leaping into Districts: Zizzers prep for title bid

West Plains R-7 Schools Activities Director Ashley Tyree Cooley points out one of many ripples through the turf field at Zizzer Stadium. Hunter Stanley, 15, a West Plains High School sophomore, recently placed third overall, winning the bronze medal, and first in his age division, at the Vacation Races Zion Half-marathon in Utah. Lady Zizzers advance to District Championship
The West Plains Lady Zizzers left no doubt on Friday night, storming past the Hillcrest Lady Hornets with a commanding 72-51 victory in the Class 5 District 6 semifinals. For the 12th year, Lady Zizzer Basketball, with the help of West Plains Bank and Trust Company, will raise funds to benefit local cancer patients through the team’s annual Pink Out game, scheduled for Thursday at West Plains High School. The Lady Zizzers will take on the Donettes of Doniphan, with junior varsity action beginning at 5:30 p.m. and a varsity contest beginning at about 7 p.m. more
The West Plains High School gymnasium buzzed with energy Friday night as the Zizzers faced off against the Parkview Vikings in the Midwinter game. During halftime of the varsity matchup, Shaley Francis was crowned the 2025 Midwinter Queen, with Jack Rutledge by her side as her escort.
