The Willow Springs High School Future Business Leaders of America team competed at FBLA Districts on Jan. 29 in Hartville. Willow students received 50 top-five medals in 29 different events and 20 individual students qualified for state competition. The response of Missouri college presidents to desegregation in 1950 will be the topic of a Black History Month presentation Feb. 27 hosted by the Ozarks Heritage Research Center (OHRC) at Missouri State University-West Plains. more

These two pups are siblings at the West Plains Regional Animal Shelter, 1486 BB Highway. Hanna and Hester are about 12 weeks old, according to shelter volunteer Trish Hammen. “We are not sure what they are mixed with; Hanna is the dominant one when it comes to food, but both are very sweet and playful,” she added. The fee to adopt is $50 per dog and includes the cost of spaying. Prospective adopters are invited to drop by the shelter or call 417-256-8438. Hammen noted financial donations are still sought for completion of the inside of the new shelter building, and expressed thanks to all who have donated thus far. more

During recent freezing temperatures and bouts of snow and ice, the Ozark Spring chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution’s meeting program on The History of Quilt Making concluded with attendees learning to tie fleece blankets to be distributed to veterans in West Plains and surrounding communities.According to the crafting website Craft Schmaft, “The history of fleece blankets dates back to the late 1970s when Malden Mills developed a fabric made of superfine polyester yarn that was light, water-resistant and had good insulation. They named it fleece, which is also the term used to describe the wool coat of sheep — despite not originating from these animals. Patagonia, a company that provided mountaineering outfits, introduced this fabric as a sportswear material. The fabric was called synchilla (synthetic chinchilla) and is considered to be the first generation of modern fleece.” Tying a blanket, from left, are Daughters Jan Tappana, Linda Collins and Connie Weber.

Since the 1977 founding of the Ozark Spring, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Chapter under the leadership of the late Dorotha Reavis, a well-known local historian and genealogist, its membership continues to grow. At the January monthly meeting, two new members were sworn in by Lois Frazier, right, on behalf of Chaplain Jessica Joice-Frazier: Robin Logue, left center, and Cathy Roberts, right center, both of West Plains. The NSDAR was founded in 1890 and is headquartered in Washington, D.C. It is a nonprofit, nonpolitical volunteer women's service organization with a mission to promote patriotism and the preservation of American history, engage in community service projects in support of veterans and provide opportunities to secure America's future through better education for children. Also with the new members is Ozark Spring Chapter Regent Jan Tappana.
