A much needed breath of fresh air

To the editor:

Regarding the March 16 editorial, “Disentangling Salvation from National Identity,” I would like to extend a big shout-out to Chris Herbolsheimer. His words were a much needed breath of fresh air — dare I say a “movement of the spirit” — in our current political climate.

While love for one’s country is a good and virtuous thing, the careful reader of scripture will be led to see that the Bible contains no specific political or economic theory to be adopted by all “true-blue” Christians. It seems to me that there ought to be Christians in all political parties in order to demonstrate — as our current political alignments cannot — that brotherhood and sisterhood in Christ is bigger than any political loyalty we might claim.

Perhaps we would be well advised to reflect upon the deep friendships forged, across the aisle, by President Ronald Reagan and House Speaker “Tip” O’Neill, or Justices Sandra Day O’Connor and Antonin as examples of still another needed breath of fresh air.

Sincerely,
J. Michael Heston,
West Plains
