The Howell County Sheriff’s Office reported that on Aug. 10, skeletal remains were found, exhumed Aug. 15, and identification through the Missouri State Highway Patrol laboratory is pending. The West Plains Police Department has advised residents in the area of Second, Third and Fourth streets, that a suspect in the burglary of several sheds and outbuildings in that neighborhood has been identified, and police have recovered stolen property that needs to go back to the rightful owners. more
The memory of Larry Dean Cochran of West Plains, and his service both as a veteran and a volunteer driving patients for Disabled American Veterans (DAV), has been honored with a plaque installed at the West Plains clinic of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Cochran served in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Goldsborough for four years and did two tours in Vietnam. He spent 21 years as a volunteer with the DAV. The main location of the John J. Pershing VA Medical Clinic is in Poplar Bluff, and the Poplar Bluff VAMC Voluntary Services reports during that time, Cochraan logged over 9,106 hours and 180,043 miles driving 1,604 veterans to their appointments. Cochran died June 7 at the age of 82. His family and West Plains VA Clinic staff, a former driver and current drivers and turned out for the plaque installation. In the words of John J. Pershing VAMC Facility Telehealth Coordinator Wanda Jones, "He will be missed." Cochran's family members were presented with a plaque to take home.
