This week concluded a two-week showing of artworks by His Place Christian Academy students at the West Plains Daily Quill. The works were displayed in the front window, coinciding with the first Thursday Downtown Stroll on April 3 and kicking off a rotating showcase of young artists in the community. On display through the next two weeks is artwork from students at Glenwood School. His Place artists’ works front row, from left: “The Amazing Robot Fort,” Noah Holt, fourth grade; “Old Rugged Cross, Jaylee (no last name given), fifth grade; and “God’s Promise,” Ethan Martin, third grade. Ozarks Christian Academy held open houses on Feb. 25 and Thursday to give potential students and their families an opportunity to tour the facilities, learn about curriculum and meet school administrators, and get enrollment information. OCA is school with grades from pre-kindergarten through 12, offering a classical faith-based education, sports and opportunities for interscholastic academic participation in competitions and Junior Beta Club. The academy is located at 210 Allen St. in West Plains. OCA hosts open house, showcases school's offerings
The public invited to an open house to formally unveil the TJ Swift House Autism Support Can Empower New Directions program facility from 1 to 3 p.m. March 8 at 701 W. Main St. on the Missouri State University-West Plains campus. The ASCEND program offers support services to students accepted to MSU-WP who have an autism diagnosis or other neurodivergency diagnosis.

Several staff members at Missouri State University-West Plains were recognized for their years of service to the university during the annual Employee Recognition Luncheon Jan. 24 at the West Plains Civic Center. Also recognized at the event were faculty who received appointments, promotions or tenure, and employees who retired during 2024. They were congratulated by MSU Director of Human Resources Scot Scobee and Assistant Director of Human Resources Patrick Hurn. MSU-WP celebrates employee milestones
Troy Wiesner, left, was selected for the 2024 Part-Time Employee of the Year at Missouri State University-West Plains. The award, given at the Jan. 24 Employee Recognition Luncheon, recognizes part-time employees who strive to do their jobs well daily, who go above and beyond the call of duty in a special situation, and who have contributed in a significant way to the success of the university. Presenting the award is Associate Vice Chancellor for Business and Support Services Crockett Oaks III.

Bakersfield School is the recipient of a Samsung technology prize package valued at $12,000, including Samsung Galaxy Book and a Galaxy Z Flip to use in the production of a video to promote its S.T.E.M. project, "Tactile Astronomy." The school is one of 50 state winners in the 15th annual Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition for students’ "Tactile Astronomy" project, and will advance to a national finalist competition with a chance to win a top prize of $100,000. Bakersfield School named state winner in Samsung STEM contest
Bakersfield School has been named one of 50 state winners in the 15th annual Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition, and received a Samsung technology package valued at $12,000, including a Samsung Galaxy Book and a Galaxy Z Flip to use for the production of a three-minute pitch video. The video must demonstrate how S.T.E.M. is being applied to address the community issue outlined in the student team's activity plans. more
Schools announce closures ahead of sleet, freezing rain
Mtn. View-Birch Tree Liberty and West Plains schools have announced no classes will be held Tuesday due to forecast icy weather. Head Start programs in both cities, plus in Licking, will also be closed. more
Crockett Oaks III, associate vice chancellor for business and support services at Missouri State University-West Plains, received the Staff Excellence in Community Engagement Award from MSU during the annual Staff Service Awards Luncheon Jan. 8 at the Springfield campus. The award, given annually, recognizes honorees for their service to the community through volunteer work with charitable, nonprofit, religious or similar organizations. Each receives a personalized plaque from the university and a $1,500 cash award from the Missouri State Foundation. A highlight of the first West Plains R-7 School Board meeting of the year included an announcement that no new candidates filed for the upcoming school board election, so member Sam Riggs and President Cindy Tyree will retain their seats for another three years, their set to expire in April. more

Sheriff Roberts responds to SRO petition
A group including parents of South Fork Elementary students is protesting the transfer of Howell County deputy and Student Resource Officer Shannon Sisney from his post at South Fork which he has held for about three years, and an online petition posted on change.org signed by about 475 individuals as of Friday morning. more
