TCMH Healthcare Foundation awards spring scholarships

Posted

The Texas County Memorial Hospital Healthcare Foundation in Houston has awarded two $1,000 scholarships to assist area students with their educational costs for the spring 2024 semester.

Jaydra Johnson of Cabool and Breanna Shuman of Raymondville received scholarships from the foundation. The Healthcare Foundation's board of directors chose the recipients from several applicants.

Johnson is an online student at Chamberlain University in Chicago, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in nursing. She is a registered nurse in the peri-operative surgery department at TCMH.

Shuman is a student at Ozarks Technical College in Nixa in the medical laboratory technician program.  She is employed at TCMH in the laboratory as a phlebotomist.

“Our board of directors believes in the importance of education for area students pursuing training in healthcare-related fields,” said Jeff Gettys, TCMH Healthcare Foundation resident.

The foundation has awarded $148,000 in scholarships to students in the area since the program's inception in 2007. These scholarships are awarded each spring and fall to students pursuing higher education. This fall, the Healthcare Foundation will also award endowed scholarship funds in addition to the regular scholarships. Applications for the fall scholarships will be accepted starting in April.

"The board of directors of the foundation acknowledges the increasing demand for healthcare professionals in rural areas," Gettys said. "We hope these scholarships will help recruit and retain qualified residents to work in the local healthcare sector."

Scholarship funds are raised through the annual golf tournament hosted by the TCMH Healthcare Foundation. Those interested in sponsoring this year's tournament are encouraged to visit TCMHFoundation.org or contact Jeff Gettys at 417-967-1377. Y
