Unity and Heritage: Lincoln School dedication ceremony marks new chapter

In a poignant celebration of history, heritage and hope, the West Plains community gathered Saturday at the historic Lincoln School on for a dedication ceremony that encapsulated the spirit of unity and educational equality. The event, which drew about 80 attendees into the small, one-room schoolhouse, served as both a culmination of the restoration efforts and a tribute to the African American educational journey during the segregation era.

The Lincoln School, located at 1400 E. Pony Thomas St., stands as a testament to the resilience and determination of the African American community in West Plains. Its restoration is not just a preservation of architecture but a reclamation of a significant piece of history that continues to resonate with the community.

The dedication ceremony, intended to coincide with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Day, highlighted the progress made from the segregation era to today, reflecting on Dr. King's legacy of civil rights and the fight for equality. The celebration was first planned to be held Jan. 15, but was rescheduled due to inclement weather.

Missouri 154th District Rep. David Evans and West Plains Mayor Mike Topliff were among the speakers who addressed the gathering, each echoing the event's central message: "We Are Lincoln." This theme underscored the collective identity and shared history of the attendees, uniting them in their celebration of the school's past and its future potential.

The ceremony was not just a formal event but a deeply emotional one, concluding with the attendees being led in singing "Lift Every Voice and Sing," often referred to as the Black National Anthem. This moment of unity and reflection underscored the significance of the Lincoln School's restoration as a beacon of hope and a symbol of the journey toward educational and racial equality.
