The Missouri Department of Conservation is investigating the illegal shooting death of a bull elk that occurred opening weekend of deer firearms season. The entire animal was reportedly left where it was shot, and a $20,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest.

The Missouri Department of Conservation is asking the public for help in finding the person who, between Saturday and Sunday, illegally killed and left a bull elk near Klepzig Mill in Shannon County. A local deer hunter found and reported the animal’s location to MDC. more
Dr. Phil Howerton is a professor of English at Missouri State University-West Plains. A sixth-generation Ozarker, he was reared on a small family farm at Long Lane in Dallas County, and attended schools at Long Lane and Buffalo. He earned degrees in English, history, and education from Drury University in Springfield and a doctorate in English from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He has taught English for more than 20 years, is cofounder and co-editor of Cave Region Review and general editor of Elder Mountain: A Journal of Ozarks Studies. His poetry collection, The History of Tree Roots, was published by Golden Antelope Press in 2015, and his anthology, The Literature of the Ozarks, was published by University of Arkansas Press in February 2019. He received the 2019 Missouri Literary Award from the Missouri Library Association. He is also founder of Cornerpost Press. His latest book, released Nov. 1, is a collection of poetry, photographs and essays also published by Golden Antelope Press, called "Gods of Four Mile Creek," available at Book Nook, 203 Washington Ave., and online at Bookshop.org, Barnes & Noble, Amazon and Powell's Books.

Student Council members at West Plains High School served a Veterans Day breakfast to veterans and their families Friday morning in the high school cafeteria. American flag cookies were also served and middle school Student Council members made treat bags and penned notes thanking veterans for their service. WPHS StuCo serves breakfast to veterans
Gov. Mike Parson gave remarks on Tuesday preceding the groundbreaking of a building on the Missouri State University-West Plains campus that will house the university's TJ Swift House A.S.C.E.N.D. Program. A.S.C.E.N.D. stands for Autism Support Can Empower New Directions, and is already in place at MSU-WP, offering support services for students with autism. Other speakers included MSU President Clif Smart, MSU-WP Chancellor Dennis Lancaster, Tracey Hollis of TJ Swift House and 33rd District State Sen. Karla Eslinger, who introduced Parson.

The West Plains Walmart grand reopening celebration on Friday included the presentation of checks to several local nonprofit groups, including $5,000 to the West Plains R-7 Bridges program. Bridges helps provide clothing, hygiene items, school supplies to students in need, the purpose to help keep them focused on their studies. Walmart’s festivities were held to mark the completion of a monthlong renovation project, finishing touches for which are still underway.
