Annual WPRAS benefit sets goal to complete funding for new shelter

Posted

The West Plains Regional Animal Shelter is taking strides to reach its fundraising goal to complete the interior of its new animal housing facility, and its annual benefit dinner this year is dedicated to crossing that finish line.

The shelter’s annual Volunteer and Friends Fall/Winter Dinner and Silent Auction is set for 6 p.m. Oct. 28 in the Magnolia Room at the West Plains Civic Center, 110 St. Louis St.

“The purpose of the auction this year is to raise money to finish the inside of the new shelter building. Without your help, we will not be able to finish the inside of the building,” explained Trish Hammen, shelter volunteer and one of the event’s organizers. “The cost of materials has gone up and so has the cost of labor. We are going to need at least $100,000  to finish the interior.”

Construction on the new facility, located on the same grounds as the existing structure, 1486 BB Highway in West Plains, began last winter. The West Plains Regional Animal Shelter is a no-kill facility that houses cats and dogs in need of homes, and day-to-day operations are primarily funded by an adjacent thrift store, Out of Harm’s Way.

Attendees to the dinner and auction are asked to bring a covered dish, salad or dessert to share. Drinks and a main dish will be provided.

“Come ready to have fun trying to outbid your friends while raising money for the animal shelter’s new building,” organizers invite. Items up for bid in the auction will include homemade and new items donated by local merchants such as quilts, gift certificates, animal supplies and antiques.

The festivities will also include live entertainment, door prizes, a 50/50 giveaway drawing and bingo.
