Youth from local congregations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently engaged in civic learning through a series of events designed to connect them with community leaders, church member Cleo Cockrum shared with the Quill.

West Plains Mayor Mike Topliff and City Administrator Sam Anselm met with a group of young men and women March 24 during a question-and-answer session at the West Plains chapel. The discussion provided an opportunity for the youth to hear firsthand about the responsibilities and challenges of local government, Cockrum said.

Ryan Morris, a stake president and area leader for the church, also attended the event and emphasized the importance of civic awareness and community involvement.

During the session, the youth posed thoughtful questions ranging from the day-to-day duties of city leadership to ways young people can contribute to their community. Topliff and Anselm offered insight into their roles while encouraging the youth to become active, informed citizens.

In addition to meeting with local officials, Cockrum noted that some youth traveled to Jefferson City to engage with state leaders and observe government at work on a broader scale. Among those attending were Brigham Arce, first counselor in the stake presidency (a regional leadership group within the church) who attends the Houston Ward, and his daughter. During their visit, they learned about the legislative process and discussed issues affecting their communities, gaining a deeper understanding of how civic responsibility extends beyond the local level.

Events like these reflect a growing emphasis on helping young people understand their role in the community.

"By interacting directly with civic and community leaders, area youth gain not only knowledge of government and leadership, but also a greater appreciation for the importance of informed, active citizenship," Cockrum said.

Organizers hope these experiences encourage continued involvement and a lifelong commitment to civic responsibility.
