The Mtn. View Garden Club has awarded its June Yard of the Month to Nick and Nancy Heavrin of 604 James St. in Mtn. View.

Club President Robi Tanner, who judged the yards alongside Janet Swope, said the couple’s dedication to pollinators immediately stood out to the committee.

"When first approaching this home, one of the first things that caught our eye is that the entire side yard was all clover," Tanner said. "We were excited to see this couple's effort to support our bee population."

The Heavrins, who moved to the home a few years ago, credit their daughter for the hard work that initially went into creating the colorful spaces. Over the years, the couple has reduced the size of the gardens to make them more manageable, resulting in a neat, well-maintained landscape that is a delight to walk through, Tanner noted.

The front left garden is bordered by rock and features a selection of perennial flowers, including carnations, sedum, Asiatic lilies, hollyhocks, Russian sage, lavender, azaleas, canna, echinacea, hibiscus and evergreens. A pink magnolia tree sits further out in the yard, while a garden full of fragrant roses is situated to the right of the house.

A fenced backyard keeps the couple's dogs and grandchildren safe and is home to a redbud tree, a lilac bush, rose of Sharon bushes, walnut trees and a small vegetable garden. Colorful pots filled with bright annuals line the back of the garage.

Tanner added that Nancy Heavrin is currently developing a new area under a tree canopy between the storage shed and the garage, which features a birdbath. Along the outside fence, purple flowers on tall, slender stalks rise from large hostas.

"Thank you, Nick and Nancy, for showing us your beautiful yard," Tanner said.

Residents can nominate hard-working neighbors or family members for Yard of the Month on the club's Facebook page at @mvgc.Mtn.viewmo.

The Mtn. View Garden Club will hold its next meeting at 1 p.m. July 22, at the Mtn. View Public Library, 125 Oak St. Member Penny Myers will lead a program titled “Uncommon Uses for Common Plants.” Guests are always welcome.

The club is a member of National Garden Clubs, Central Region Garden Clubs and Federated Garden Clubs.
