New eight-week Stay Strong, Stay Healthy classes kick off Jan. 31

Posted

The University of Missouri Extension office of Howell County offers an eight-week strength training program for older adults and is taking registrations now for the next session beginning Jan. 31.

Classes will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. or 11 a.m. to noon Mondays and Wednesdays through April 1.

“Strength training is no longer just for bodybuilders,” said Stephanie Johnson, extension nutrition and health education specialist. “Stay Strong, Stay Healthy is an eight-week strength training program designed for older adults who want to improve their quality of life and stay active.”

The Stay Strong, Stay Healthy program is an evidenced-based course aimed at keeping participants’ bodies and minds functioning at their best. According to the designers of the program, regularly completing strengthening exercises will help build muscle and increase bone density, preventing frailty and osteoporosis.

The exercises are easy to learn, safe and effective. No need to wear special clothes, say organizers — just comfortable, loose-fitting pants and shirt, along with sturdy, closed-toe walking shoes.

“Stay Strong, Stay Healthy Classes include warm-up exercises, eight strengthening exercises, with or without hand and ankle weights, and cool-down stretches,” explained Johnson.

Class size is limited and advance registration is required. To register for the class, call 417-256-2391, email howellco@missouri.edu or drop by the extension office, 1376 Bill Virdon Blvd.
