With the 98th anniversary of the Bond Dance Hall explosion occurring this month, the City of West Plans has announced it has begun early planning to mark the tragedy’s centennial on April 13, 2028.
One of the most tragic events in West Plains history took place on the evening of April 13, 1928, when an explosion destroyed the downtown dance hall, claiming the lives of dozens of community members and injuring many more.
The 2028 observance is being developed as a community-focused remembrance to honor the lives lost, give historical context and offer opportunities for reflection, said city officials. Preliminary plans include educational outreach for local students, a temporary historical exhibit featuring archived materials and an evening program centered on the history and lasting impact of the disaster.
As planning efforts continue, city officials are asking for help from the community to ensure the story is preserved with accuracy and care. Anyone with family ties to the victims, historical photographs, documents or personal stories related to the event are encouraged to share their information.
“The city of West Plains is committed to honoring this significant moment in our community’s history with the respect it deserves,” officials said in a statement.
Those willing to share information or materials may contact Downtown Coordinator Emily Long via email at emily.long@westplains.gov.
