Adult male summer tanagers are entirely red and easily seen as they forage for insects among bright green tree leaves in early summer. Ahead of Independence Day and the nation's 250th anniversary, the Missouri Department of Conservation encourages the public to celebrate by looking for red, white and blue in native animals and plants during their outdoor activities. For more information on finding and identifying native wildlife, visit the MDC online field guide at mdc.mo.gov/discover-nature/field-guide.
