Cameron Miller won the 100-meter dash title and Jared Kraft took first place in the high jump to lead the West Plains Zizzers at the Missouri State High School Activities Association Class 4 State Track and Field Championships, held May 29 and 30 at Adkins Stadium in Jefferson City.
“We had a strong showing at the state meet and an end to a very good season,” West Plains Head Coach Alicia Gunter said. “I’m so proud of all the kids.”
Boys Results
Miller secured the 100-meter state title with a time of 10.51 seconds and followed it up with a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash at 21.88 seconds.
Kraft claimed the state championship in the high jump, clearing a personal-best 2.09 meters to secure the top spot on the podium.
In the throwing events, Jaxon Hunter placed fourth in the discus with a 50.59-meter toss and fifth in the shot put at 17.40 meters.
On the track, Hunter Stanley finished 10th in the 3,200-meter run with a personal-best time of 9:30.98.
The boys 4x800-meter relay team of Trevin Smith, Joseph Roberson, Blake Romans and Stanley placed ninth with a time of 8:11.50. The 4x100-meter relay team of Mason Matejek, Gavin Kenslow, Kael Harrison and Miller placed 11th, crossing the line in 43.01 seconds.
Girls Results
On the girls side, Mylea Adams broke school records in both the 100- and 200-meter sprints while adding top-seven finishes in the long jump and triple jump.
Adams finished fifth in the 100 meters with a time of 12.21 seconds and seventh in the 200 meters with a personal-best 25.44 seconds. In the field events, she placed fifth in the long jump at 5.36 meters and fifth in the triple jump with a personal-best mark of 11.03 meters.
Kaebrynn Gunter placed sixth in the 1,600-meter run with a personal-best time of 5:06.60.
The 4x800-meter relay team of Lena Finke, Libby Hart, Karlee Romans and Gunter placed ninth in 9:55.41.
“The athletes who competed and narrowly missed all-state also competed hard and represented our school and community well,” coach Gunter said. “This group of kids carried on the strong tradition of Zizzer track and field and added so much to that tradition.”
She also credited the support system that helped build the team's success throughout the year.
“I’d like to thank the athletes that were on the team this year. They all got better all season long," she said. "Also the parents and the community, but most of all, the assistant coaches who coached the specific events to make us as good as we could be. It was a good season.”
