According to the dictionary, to be generous is to give freely, to show kindness or to give in abundance something valuable. I think the antonyms of generosity may give us the clearest understanding of the concept. Opposites of generosity are stinginess, greed and selfishness.
Generosity is a godly trait. We see it in the character of God and the teachings of Jesus. God blesses us abundantly in many ways. In Psalm 36:5 we read, “Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies.”
In the beauty of nature, in the saving grace of Jesus Christ, and in the comforting presence of the Holy Spirit, we experience God’s generous nature. I think we are best able to enjoy God’s generosity when we ourselves are generous to others.
Remember, it was Jesus who said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). Prov. 19:17 says, “Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.”
May we be generous as we share our time, talent and treasure with others, and may God bless your week!
