Every day we hear about disasters, storms, violence, conflicts and sickness. We live in a world where suffering abounds, and we need God’s help more than ever.
Through the centuries, prayer has carried people through the most difficult of circumstances. Don’t underestimate its impact. James 5:16 urges us to “pray for one another.” Take time to pray for others. Pray in a specific way and ask God to give strength, wisdom, healing, peace ... “the peace of God which surpasses all understanding” (Phil. 4:7).
I used to think that "lifting someone up in prayer" was just an expression, but it isn’t. Prayers do lift us up and raise us to what David called in Psalm 61, “the rock that is higher than I.” Praying for others brings them and us closer to God.
Comforter
On a cold night, we appreciate the warmth a comforter can provide. However, the only time the word “comforter” appears in the Bible, it does not describe a blanket. In John 14:26, as Jesus tells his friends goodbye, he says he will not leave them orphaned. Jesus says, “But the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all I have said to you.”
The Greek word "paraclete" is translated as Comforter, Advocate, Counselor and Helper. Literally, "paraclete" means one called alongside to help.
God has sent the Holy Spirit to guide and empower us. The Spirit bears our pain, our anguish, our darkness and wraps us in God’s unfailing love. We are not alone. Our Comforter is with us.
May God bless your week!
