West Plains sent two golfers to the Missouri State High School Activities Association Class 4 state tournament at Columbia Country Club, where weather and circumstance added complication to an already tough test.

The opening round on Monday was wiped out by thunderstorms, compressing the event and forcing Zizzers seniors Johnny Sutherland and Ashby Wood into tighter, more unforgiving rhythms when play resumed.

West Plains head coach Brenton Bush said the moment mattered much more than the scorecards.

“Taking two golfers to the state tournament was a significant accomplishment," Bush said, "and provides a strong foundation for the continued growth of the program."

In a field of 92 golfers on the par-71 layout, Sutherland shot an 80 to finish in an eight-way tie for 37th place. Wood shot an 82, landing in a nine-way tie for 54th.

Bush pointed to persistence, rather than placement, as the defining takeaway from their final rounds wearing Zizzers gear.

“What stood out most was the way they completed their high school golf careers, demonstrating resilience and the ability to respond to setbacks in a positive and competitive manner,” he said. “Their performance in the face of adversity reflected strong character and commitment.”

The results, he added, reach beyond a rainy weekend in Columbia. For a program still building identity and depth, the example set by the upperclassmen serves to open eyes.

“Additionally, their achievement has helped establish motivation within the underclassmen,” the coach said. “It has created a clear example of what is possible and has encouraged younger athletes to set higher goals for themselves.”
