In recognition of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Cabool Mayor Danny Cannon, right, recently stopped by the Christos House Resale Shop in West Plains to sign a proclamation in support of domestic abuse awareness on behalf of the city of Cabool. Texas County is part of the Christos House service area, which also includes Howell, Ozark, Douglas, Wright, Oregon, Shannon and Carter counties. Besides awareness and prevention, the agency partners with the communities it serves to connect survivors with services and collects data showing the need and success of those services. Students in Hanna Ellett's second grade class at Howell Valley visited McWilliams Pumpkin Patch and had fun bouncing on the ground level inflatable jumping pillow. Other activities enjoyed during the field trip included up-close encounters with exotic and barnyard animals and birds, a corn maze, giant slide, tire swings and a train ride. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. Admission is $15 each, free for children age 2 and younger, with additional optional concessions and activities. For the record, West Plains attorneys Seth Owens, left, and John Williams, right, have signed the historic register of attorneys at the Howell County courthouse and were sworn in by Presiding 37th Judicial Circuit Judge Steven Privette, center. As such, they are now officially registered to practice law in Howell County. Owens came to the profession after 13 years of being a physical therapist, and it was his experience with patients and their struggle with qualifying for benefits that inspired him to become an attorney to assist veterans. Williams has joined his father Roy Williams at the Henry, Williams & Kinder, P.C. law firm. His focus will be personal injury litigation.

The Willow Springs Chamber of Commerce recently hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for the grand opening of Restoring Hope’s new location in Willow Springs. The disability service provider is headquartered in West Plains and in its mission statement, says, “We believe it is our mission to support individuals with disabilities by encouraging and assisting them to accomplish health and fitness goals, valued personal goals and a sense of belonging in their home and community. We will provide a supportive atmosphere of love, care, acceptance, dignity and respect.” Chamber Director Kim McCormick enthusiastically welcomed the company to the Willow Springs area. Holding the ribbon are chamber board members Robert Hollis, left, and Kim Fredrick. Cutting the ribbon in the center is Danielle Coffey, director of community-based services for Restoring Hope.

Ash Flat man suffers fatal injuries in crash
An Ash Flat, Ark., man suffered fatal injuries in a crash that occurred at 12:28 p.m. Oct. 4 in Highland, Sharp County, Ark., the Highland Police Department reported to the Arkansas State Police, which publicized the report. more
Maple trees, such as this picturesque specimen on South Curry Street in West Plains, are among the first to show signs of fall, particularly red maples, native to the Ozarks, which are beginning to hint at the bright red coloring their leaves will soon bear. Other trees showing signs of fall are buckeyes, black walnuts, sassafras, sumac and Virginia creeper.

Rep. David Evans, 154th District, left, was recently recognized by Missouri Supreme Court Chief Justice Mary Russell, right, with gratitude for his service as a legislator in protecting and improving the judicial system in Missouri. Prior to being elected to the House, Evans was a judge for 27 years in the 37th Judicial Circuit. He will retire from his office at the end of the year.
