The Missouri State Highway Patrol distributed this artist's rendering of a woman found dead in January 2022, asking for the public's help in identifying her. Her remains were found by the side of U.S. 60 in Winona. She has now been identified as Debra Ramsey of Alton in court records seeking charges against her brother, Robert Bender, also of Alton. On Thursday, warrants for Bender's arrest were issued out of Oregon and Shannon counties on charges of murder, stealing and abandonment of a corpse.

Chris Harlin stands beside the old safe that was installed in the Bank of Gainesville (now Century Bank of the Ozarks) when it opened on the Gainesville square in 1894. The 4,500-pound safe was hauled to Gainesville by horse-drawn wagon from West Plains and had to be retrieved from the river when it fell into the water during the crossing at Tecumseh. The safe now stands near the front door of the Century Bank lobby in Gainesville.

Wanted man found hiding in furnace, charged with resisting arrest
A Howell County man being sought on active warrants was eventually found by deputies while hiding in a furnace, after the Howell County S.W.A.T. unit was called to a home in Pomona, according to a probable cause statement submitted by Sgt. Seth Smith of the Howell County Sheriff's Department at the time. more

A town hall and candidate meet-and-greet held June 28 at Wages Brewing Company in West Plains featured Democratic candidates for county, state and U.S. office speaking on platform issues, plus live music from Elk Creek, Texas County, performers The Spellsingers. Speakers at the event were Democratic candidate for Howell County Coroner Jeff Collins of rural West Plains, Democratic candidate for Missouri 154th House District Representative JoJo Stewart of Willow Springs and Democratic Candidate for U.S. Congress Missouri 8th District Randi McCallian, Rolla. McCallian addressed topics such as Missouri’s high maternity and infant mortality rate in comparison to the rest of the county, and spoke critically of current 8th District Rep. Jason Smith, pointing to what she described as policy failures and a tendency to support big business at the expense of his constituency.
