A month after the Jan. 2020 death of his sister, Doug Martin addressed the West Plains City Council. He asked them what could be done about the U.S. 63 intersection with CC Highway and Gibson Avenue, and with the bypass in general, to make it safer for traffic. Martin’s sister, Anna Hambelton, suffered fatal injuries when a semitruck ran a red light on U.S. 63 bypass at Gibson Avenue in West Plains, striking the car in which she rode.
Semitruck driver in 2020 crash that killed Dora resident sentenced to 10 years in prison

One is for upgrades to internet service and computer equipment and extended staff hours, and the second will allow the organization to hire a consultant to complete a feasibility study for the development of industrial incubator projects. Ozark County battered on Wed. by storm winds
A thunderstorm with wind gusts measuring up to 68 mph Wednesday night downed trees and power lines across roads in Ozark County. While most of the damage seemed to occur in the western part of the county., the Ozark County Sheriff’s Office reported a driver in Bakersfield was unhurt when a tree fell on a moving car. more

The Bakersfield Volunteer Fire Department responded Saturday evening to clear storm-felled trees from several roads, including O Highway, Highway 101 and Smokey Road. A tree was also reported down on U.S. 160 at Cloud 9 Ranch near Caulfield. Bakersfield firefighters extended a “huge thank you” late Saturday night via social media to local volunteers including those with Tecumseh, Caulfield and Moody fire departments, and staff with the Ozark County Road and Bridge Department for helping to clear the roads. Gratitude was also expressed to Howell-Oregon Electric crews for their efforts to restore power.

Douglas County man faces 8 felony weapon, assault charges
An Ava resident who was being investigated after a complaint that he fired a weapon, striking a home, now has eight felony charges filed against him and a warrant with a $100,000 bond after law enforcement reportedly confiscated an alleged pipe bomb, firearms, ammunition, gunpowder and other ingredients commonly used to build explosive devices. more

Deputy: Woman with hammer faces assault charges
A Douglas County woman is charged with 13 felonies after allegedly using caution tape in an effort to close a section of highway, then using a hammer to threaten motorists in three separate vehicles, reportedly damaging two of the vehicles after she was refused a ride. more

Last Sunday, the Eastern Douglas County Volunteer Fire Department welcomed Deputy Chief Gary Larrow of the Pecatonica, Ill., Fire Department. Larrow, left, was in the area to visit family members and made a special stop by EDCVFD to bring a donation, Public Information Officer Kathy Gifford with the local fire department. Items donated were newer, more compact extrication tools, consisting of a combination cutter/splitter, cutter, hoses and a compressor. Commonly known as " The Jaws of Life,’’ Gifford explained, the tools are crucial in the event of motor vehicle accidents. “We at Eastern Douglas are so grateful for this generous donation, and would like to thank Deputy Chief Larrow and the Pecatonica Fire Department for their generosity,” said Gifford. “Donations such as these provide the department with the tools necessary for us to be more effective and efficient in serving our community." Receiving the donation on behalf of the fire department is EDCFVD Chief Chris Hammett.
