Mtn. View town hall, city council meeting turns contentious over city administrator position

View City Council meeting was meant to allow public commentary and discussion of a controversial proposal to hire a city administrator. Phillip Brege, city electric department employee, checks and changes bulbs on a Christmas wreath downtown. Three city crews were out Monday under blue skies and in warm temperatures, getting West Plains spruced up for the holiday season. Drivers around town may have noticed some of the snowflake lights that grace the city's main streets have also started going up, and the city Christmas tree will go up at the end of November. As of today, Christmas is only 39 days away.

The American Hospital Association (AHA), in partnership with the Missouri Hospital Association (MHA), announced this week it has honored Tom Keller, president and CEO of Ozarks Healthcare in West Plains, with the Partnership for Action Grassroots Champion Award. more
The Bikers United nonprofit group of West Plains recently dissolved, and to zero out the organization’s finances, members decided to go out in a big way and make donations to other local nonprofits, including a $3,393.70 contribution to the Boys & Girls Club of the Greater West Plains Area. BGC CEO Elizabeth Cawthon said the club will use the funds to help finish off a kitchen remodel at the club, in order to feed evening meals to club members. The kitchen is also used to help prepare meals fed to community children during the summer "Meet Up & Eat Up," which provides free lunches to all children while school is out. Members of the West Plains R-7 School Board will meet at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the high school library with a closed session, followed by an open session at about 5:30. The meeting is being held a week earlier than usual to avoid holding it during the following week's Thanksgiving break. more

A three-vehicle crash at about 11:45 a.m. Thursday in rural Sharp County, Ark., claimed the life of a 26-year-old man from Williford, a community with a population of about 70 people located about 10 miles southeast of Hardy, Ark. more

Retired Army National Guard Brigadier General Mike Pace, West Plains, served as the grand marshal for this year's Veterans Day parade, held Friday in downtown West Plains. During his military career, Pace earned many distinctive honors, and at one point was the joint force land component commander, in operations control commanding all Army units of the Missouri National Guard. He is a Bronze Star recipient who retired from military service in 2008, and during his service also was employed for about 33 years with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, achieving the rank of major and retiring as director of the criminal investigation bureau in Jefferson City. He is being driven along the parade route by the owner of the classic Camaro in which he is riding, Tillman Durham. Watch Wednesday's Quill for more parade pictures.

An assembly was held Friday morning at the high school to honor veterans following a breakfast sponsored by the school district and served by members of the high school Student Council.

American flag cookies were also served and middle school Student Council members made treat bags and penned notes thanking veterans for their service. WPHS StuCo serves breakfast to veterans
The back wheels of a trailer attached to a semiatruck overturned during a sharp turn at about 8 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of West Thornburgh Street and Lincoln Avenue in West Plains, dumping some of its load and blocking traffic at the intersection. The cab and front wheels of the trailer remained upright, and no injuries were reported for the driver, who was making a delivery to the Armstrong Flooring lumber yard a few blocks north of the intersection, off of Abe Taylor Street. Hughes Towing helped with stabilizing the trailer while West Plains police officers directed traffic around the intersection. Meanwhile the dumped lumber was offloaded while waiting for another trailer to come pick up the load.

WP Bank and Trust supports Rotary Backpack Program fundraiser
Caring for soldiers during their service and after, the Ozark Independent Living (O.I.L.) Veteran Directed Care (VDC) Department will send boxes of items collected at the office to soldiers serving overseas during the Christmas season. Items needed include drink and instant food packets, hard candy, popcorn, and gum; basic toiletries like dental care items, shampoos and lotions; travel size board games and cards, puzzles, paperback books, puzzle books and letter writing supplies; and other items like laundry detergent pods, dryer sheets, ankle/boot socks, and non-lithium ion AA or AAA batteries. See the attached article for a more detailed list and information on the VDC program administered through O.I.L.
