Many poles were broken during Hurricane Helene's impact on Sept. 26 and 27 in the southeastern U.S. Two Howell-Oregon Electric Cooperative linemen, who traveled to Georgia in the storm's aftermath, work to remove old materials from the ground and the broken poles. The ground in Georgia is much sandier than the dirt and rocks they are used to in Missouri, co-op officials noted.

Great Rivers Distributing Co. was the Saloon Sponsor for Saturday’s Blue Jean Ball held at Silver Springs Ranch in West Plains. The company’s contribution was to provide beverages for the evening. The event is an annual fundraiser for the Ozarks Healthcare Foundation, with proceeds going toward healthcare scholarships for locals pursuing careers in education, as well as efforts to improve patient care. Friday’s West Plains High School pep rally held as part of Homecoming festivities was described by West Plains R-7 Communications Director Lana Snodgras as “a blast.” With no parade held due to rain, students kicked off Homecoming with a Hot Stuff vs. Teacher volleyball showdown, a special proclamation from West Plains Mayor Mike Toplliff and the announcement of the grand marshal, Activities Director Ashley Cooley. They also celebrated the sports teams and clubs and introduced the Homecoming Court. “The Zizzer Pride Band performed the fight song, and the class tug of war was so much fun,” Snodgras concluded. “Congrats to the junior class spirit stick winners.” Turn to Pages A6 and A7 of today's Gazette to see the sponsors supporting this year's Homecoming.

Howell Valley School has received a generous grant of $2,621 from the Community Foundation of the Ozarks, in collaboration with the Louis L. and Julia Dorothy Coover Charitable Foundation and Commerce Trust. The funding was used to enhance the school’s science lab with the purchase of a high-powered microscope and a stereoscope. more
