Local media teams up for legislative, judicial candidate debate
The West Plains Daily Quill, Ozark Radio News and Howell County News are partnering to host a moderated candidate debate at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, at the West Plains Civic Center Exhibit Hall. The evening will feature a debate between Democratic candidate JoJo Stewart and Republican candidate Travis Smith, who are both vying for the 154th Missouri House District seat. Incumbent Rep. Lisa Durnell declined the invitation to participate, though organizers have extended a standing invitation for her to join up to the date of the event.
The event will also include a debate among the four candidates for Howell County Associate Judge: Lyndell Beard, Larry Burton, Heath Hardman and Marty Simpson.
Constituents residing in Howell or adjoining counties are invited to submit advance questions for all candidates. Journalists from the three news outlets will collaboratively evaluate and curate questions for relevance, giving preference to signed submissions. Approved questions for the legislative candidates will be provided to them simultaneously in advance. Attendees may also submit questions in person the night of the event to be read aloud from the audience if approved by the moderator.
Due to rigorous ethical standards for judicial races, questions for the associate judge candidates must be submitted in advance and will not be accepted the night of the event. Judicial questions will be prepared and edited in cooperation with the submitter but will not be provided to the candidates ahead of time.
The deadline to submit questions to the Quill is 9 a.m. July 13 via email at news@westplainsdailyquill.net, by phone at 417-256-9191, or in person at 205 Washington Ave. in West Plains. Questions can also be submitted to Howell County News at editor@howellcountynews.com, by phone at 417-252-2123, or in person at 110 W. Main St. in Willow Springs, and Ozark Radio News at news@ozarkmarketingcompany.com.
