Going the extra mile:

PTSC therapists bring big-city care close to home

Posted

For more than 40 years, Physical Therapy Specialists Clinic (PTSC) has expanded its reach across the region, growing from a single provider in June 1984 into a comprehensive rehabilitation hub with locations in West Plains and Mtn. Grove.

In the course of that history, the driving force behind the clinic's evolution has been the hands-on dedication of its staff — professionals who have continually pursued advanced, specialized training to bring big-city medical care directly to the rural Ozarks.

In the medical field, progress often requires significant personal investment. For the staff at PTSC, this has meant spending weekends studying and logging hours of continuing education to achieve advanced certifications.

PTSC Chief of Staff Ronnica Warren sees this dedication firsthand, noting that her staff's willingness to go above and beyond is what sets the clinic apart. When one local patient needed a highly specific treatment but was unable to make the long drive to Springfield, a PTSC therapist voluntarily took the necessary classes to earn the credentials required to treat him. Because of that therapist's initiative, the patient was able to stay close to home and has seen significant improvement.

That level of dedicated care allows therapists to be "able to get to the root of a problem, get answers [patients have] been looking for," Warren said.

The clinic has earned a Certified McKenzie Institute designation and features clinicians trained in specialized fields such as vestibular rehabilitation, concussion management, LSVT for Parkinson’s disease, dry needling and blood flow restriction therapy. The variety and caliber of treatments offered means the clinic isn’t just serving residents of the immediate local area; Warren pointed out some patients travel from as far away as Columbia, or cross the Arkansas state line to find the help they need.

These specialists also operate progressive, leading-edge rehabilitation technology rarely found in rural settings. The clinic uses advanced equipment such as MedX, SwimEx aquatic therapy, Repex, BTE and Focused Shockwave therapy, allowing patients to undergo modern recovery regimens close to home.

The Focused Shockwave therapy is among the clinic’s newest technology to offer. It is a pain-management treatment that stimulates blood flow and localized healing.

"As a team, we decided to go ahead and pursue it," Warren said, explaining its benefits for chronic pain issues like bursitis, as well as athletic injuries. "It's a tool that can provide immediate relief. It won't ever replace physical therapy, but it can provide relief."

For local athletes, that immediate relief is integral to physical therapy progress, helping them get back in the game faster. The hands of PTSC’s staff extend well beyond the walls of their treatment rooms, continuing a tradition that began when the clinic hired the first licensed athletic trainer in the area to provide sports medicine coverage for local student-athletes.

Beyond athletics, the clinic’s professionals work directly with local employers in the industrial sector to provide employment physicals, drug and alcohol testing, pulmonary function testing and comprehensive employee wellness programs.

In a rural community, the staff isn't just treating anonymous patients; they are treating their neighbors.

"If someone gets better, or has good results, they'll tell their friends and family," Warren said. "We always want to help people get better — it makes their lives better."

Recently, the concept of "local investment" took on a literal meaning for the clinic's staff. On July 1, 2025, PTSC officially transitioned to an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), Recently, the concept of "local investment" took on a literal meaning for the clinic's staff.

"People have more of a sense of accountability and pride in what they do, and it helps us deliver results better," Warren said.

Today, the team members greeting patients, developing treatment plans, and operating the technology are also the owners of the facility. Through ongoing education, community partnerships, and now employee ownership, the professionals at PTSC are ensuring that progressive, high-quality healthcare remains firmly in local hands.

"It all goes back to seeing them help patients get better," Warren said of her team, "but also seeing them do what they love, seeing them have a positive impact."
