There’s something about the “-ber” months (SeptemBER OctoBER NovemBER DecemBER… you get it ) that whispers books, coffee and a “Gilmore Girls” rewatch. I know many of my readers could be happiest experiencing a crisp autumn morning in a cozy chair, surrounded by books with a hot pumpkin beverage in hand. I want to highlight a couple of events around town to get you more involved in your community and inspire your next read.

One of the most popular events at the West Plans Public Library returns Tuesday! Book Bingo is back, and this time we are headed to Stars Hollow for a coffee-filled evening of books and fun. The event is completely free, but seating is limited — and cannot be reserved — so arrive early with your group. Bingo goes from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Even if you aren’t a “Gilmore Girls” fan, this event is sure to have plenty of books that invoke fall — plus a book to take home if you win.

The Bookshelf Bookclub (led by yours truly) meets at 9 a.m. Saturday Sept. 26, to discuss “The Children’s Blizzard” by Melanie Benjamin. This novel takes place in the Dakota territory in 1888, when a huge blizzard traps a schoolhouse full of children and teachers, forcing decisions that will either save them or doom them.  Inspired by true events, this historical fiction is ultimately a story of courage and resilience.  Copies of this novel can be borrowed from behind the circulation desk at the West Plains Public Library. Read the novel beforehand and join us for a casual discussion to start your weekend.

For younger readers, Story Time at The West Plains Public Library is back on Tuesdays. Bring your little ones from 10 to 11 a.m. for a story and a craft, or from 3:30 to 4 p.m. for a story, a snack and coloring.  It’s all free and you are sure to see some smiling faces while sneakily teaching the love of reading.

If you would like to get into the autumn spirit through film, The Bookshop is hosting a movie and craft night at The Glass Sword Cinema on Wednesday. Bring your craft and watch “Practical Magic 2” with a fun group! Tickets can be purchased through The Bookshop or thebookshopwp.com. Keep an eye on their social media pages and website for more events this season.

I appreciate this community so much, and it’s so exciting to see all the literary events West Plains is bringing to life! God has gifted so many of you with great ideas. Check back next month to see what else is going on between the pages in our neck of the woods.
