Zizzers cross country sweeps Kentucky invitational

The West Plains boys and girls cross country teams both captured first place at the Marshall County Invitational on Saturday at Marshall County High School in Benton, Ky.

Hunter Stanley won the boys 5K race with a time of 16:02.33, while Kaebrynn Gunter took the girls individual championship, crossing the finish line in 18:37.83.

"The teams raced well as a team and took care of getting their teammates in position," West Plains Head Coach Alicia Gunter said. "We always enjoy traveling out of our area a bit and competing against different teams. The boys and girls teams performed very well this weekend."

The Zizzers prepare now for a highly competitive meet Saturday at the Frank Horton Twilight Run in Memphis, Tenn.

Capital City edges Zizzers soccer 3-2

The West Plains boys soccer team fell 3-2 to Capital City on Saturday at Zizzer Stadium, despite a late rally and a two-goal performance by Hudson Cox.

Capital City built an early 2-0 lead in the first half before Cox scored on an assist from Avenier Kulakevich. Capital City responded with another goal with two minutes left in the half to take a 3-1 lead into the break.

West Plains controlled possession in the second half but couldn't capitalize until Cox found the net again in the 77th minute of the 80-minute match.

"We showed some great urgency very late in the game, but it was too little, too late at that point, and we ran out of time to find the equalizer," West Plains Head Coach Jimmy Miller said. "We have to find ways to not give up early goals, as well as those goals right before halftime, as they have been momentum shifters and momentum killers for us.”

“We have to be more consistent in our overall team intensity, urgency and effort for 80 minutes, and as the coach, I have to make sure the guys understand the significance of those non-negotiables,” Miller added.

Lady Zizzers take down two at Notre Dame Tri

The West Plains volleyball team picked up a pair of road victories on Saturday, defeating Notre Dame 3-1 (25-17, 25-17, 23-25, 25-16) and Cape Central 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-4) at a tri-match in Cape Girardeau.

Against Notre Dame, Kinley Smith and Violet Hafer led the Lady Zizzers with 14 kills each. Aubrey Tidwell served four of the team's nine aces and dished out 37 assists. Defensively, Emersyn Brunson tallied 16 digs, and Hafer added 15.

"We defeated Notre Dame in the district championship last year, so we knew they would give us their best and want to beat us Saturday," West Plains head coach Hailey Beazley said.

The Zizzers kept their momentum in the sweep of Cape Central, racking up 13 team aces. Delani Wahome led the attack with eight kills, followed by Natalie Ell with seven, and Hafer and Ashlyn Tinsley with six apiece. Tidwell recorded 27 assists and 12 digs, while Brunson added 15 digs and Ell tallied 11.
