Arbor Day literally translates to “tree day” and is a tradition started in 1872 as a support to the conservation movement of the late 19th centure. It is celebrated on the last Friday of April in the United States, during spring planting season. This year, as part of the Ozark Spring chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution’s 2024 project for Lincoln School in West Plains, Daughters planted a white dogwood tree purchased from West Plains Greenhouses and Nursery. Crockett Oaks, III, co-owner of Lincoln School, assisted in planting of the tree and placing the plaque commemorating the event. The Mtn. View Garden Club held its annual Spring Plant and Bulb sale on May 4. “The weather was perfect for an event such as this one, with the storms only coming in during the last few minutes of the sale,” said club member Robi Tanner. After the sale, the members enjoyed a leisurely lunch at Viandel Vineyard. “The members always enjoy bringing in the plants from their homes and gardens to share with others,” Tanner shared. “We are so grateful to the members of the community who come out to support us. The spring and fall plant sales are the club’s only fundraising events and without the support and donations, the club would not be able to maintain the beautiful gardens throughout the city. The Mtn. View Garden Club announces Sydney Radford, a recently-graduated senior at Mtn. View-Birch Tree Library High School, has been named the 2024 recipient of the club’s Emily Holden Scholarship. “Sydney is excellent student and very active in the school’s FFA program where she has won numerous awards,” said club members, adding Radford will continue her education at Missouri State University-West Plains and her plan is to become a teacher and share her love of horticulture.The Mtn.
