The John T. Kirk Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1828 in West Plains recently presented a check for $375 to MUNCH Food Pantry in Willow Springs on October 22, 2024. The contribution was made through the Uniting to Combat Hunger & Homelessness grant by the VFW Foundation. Receiving the check for MUNCH at left is Ruth Anne Dekrey. Woman’s Library Club I of West Plains recently met for the first meeting of the 20254-25 club year, hosted by Diana Pace. Lynn James "LJ" Temple, a student at West Plains High School, gave a presentation about his tour of the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City, which he went on as part of the annual Sophomore Pilgrimage. The tour is sponsored by the General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Missouri, District 6, of which the Woman’s Library Club I is a member organization. During the meeting, a closed session was held and officers were elected for the 2024-25 year. From left, they are Secretary Carol Johnson, Treasurer Irene Wagoner, Vice President Mary Moore and President Kathy Grigsby.

West Plains R-7 School District Board Secretary Erica Jones was recently recognized by the Missouri School Boards Association as one of the first in the state to complete the new MSBA Board Secretary Academy and earn certification. The academy required Jones to attend additional hours of training and observe multiple school board meetings across the state.

Zizzer sophomores take history project to next level
West Plains High School World History students, June Sanderson and Natalie Verrall, took a Renaissance project to the next level. As part of Jordan McLaurin's class, the two sophomores researched a famous Renaissance figure, choosing Leonardo da Vinci, presented his impact on history, and crafted what school district Communications Director Lana Snodgras described as an “amazing” model of the Louvre to represent their work. more

Fall Senior Expo to be held Tuesday
Southern Care and Comfort in-home agency and veteran services and the West Plains Senior Center are teaming up to host a Fall Senior Expo from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the center, 416 E. Main St., across from the West Plains Civic Center. more
Boys & Girls Club to host Masked Singer contest for fundraiser
The Boys & Girls Club of the Greater West Plains Area is calling for singers to compete in a Masked Singer contest to be held during a Valentine’s Masquerade fundraising event in February. more
“Ora has been in the shelter for over a year waiting for a forever home,” said West Plains Regional Animal Shelter volunteer Trish Hammen of this dog. “She is a little shy, but very sweet.” Volunteers are unsure of Ora’s breed but suspect the dog may be a Rottweiler-Labrador mix. Ora will be spayed and given updated vaccinations before adoption.The fee to adopt is normally $50 and includes the cost of spaying or neutering and vaccinations, however the shelter’s policy for animals that it has housed for a year or longer is to make them available free to a good home. “While visiting with Ora, check out our new shelter building,” invited Hammen. “The building is nearly finished, but we still need donations to finish the last details. We are planning for the new thrift shop building, also.” To learn more about adopting a pet or to see the building upgrades, drop by the shelter at 1486 BB Highway between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, or call 417-256-8438.

Dr. Janet Brewer’s Human Anatomy class took a trip from West Plains High School to the Eleven Point Equine Clinic in Thomasville. There, veterinarian Dr. Roger Shaw demonstrated equine procedures and highlighted their connections to human anatomy. The Howell County Rural Fire Department, 1949 E. K Highway, will host a spaghetti dinner fundraiser from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 26. Proceeds raised will go toward the department’s Memorial Garden upkeep. more
