From the May 28, 1976, edition of the Quill: LEARNING THE ART OF QUILT TYING by first making doll quilts, young members of the Howell County Volunteers now try a bigger version. Working on the quilt are left to right, Shelly Mauldin, 11, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Smith, West Plains; Pat Jones from Peace Valley, coordinator of the quilting sessions; and instructor Cindy Carter, 15, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus Carter, Hutton Valley. Meeting on Monday and Friday for a four-week period, volunteers aged 7-17 are instructed in quilt tying. Finished quilts, shown in background, are then given to needy families. Volunteers are awarded a certificate and may keep their finished doll quilts at the end of the program. Sewing notions such as needles, thread, tape measures, thimbles, yarn and sewing boxes are needed by the group, according to Mrs. Jones. Chairs are also needed, said Mrs. Jones. Those wishing to donate items should call 256-5759.
