Ahead of National Safe Boating Week, the Missouri State Highway Patrol's Troop G will offer boat equipment inspections at area waterways to help ensure vessels are in compliance with state law.
National Safe Boating Week runs from May 16 through 22. Patrol Col. Michael A. Turner reminds residents of the importance of safe boating practices as the summer recreation season approaches.
To help boaters prepare, marine operations troopers will be stationed at two regional access points from 8 to 10 a.m. on May 16. Troopers will be available at the Theodosia Marina Boat Ramp on Bull Shoals Lake, located at 509 L.B. Cook Memorial Drive in Theodosia, and at the Van Buren Riverfront Boat Ramp on the Current River, located off Watercress Road near Main Street and Business U.S. 60.
During the events, troopers will inspect vessels for required safety equipment. They will also verify that boats feature proper registration numbers on both sides with appropriate spacing — such as MO 1234 AB — along with current registration stickers. Regulations require 2-inch spacing before and after the numbers, and 3-inch-high letters that contrast with the color of the boat.
For additional information on the inspection stations, contact Troop G Headquarters, 1226 W. Business U.S. 60 in Willow Springs, by calling 417-469-3121.
